Just for Dan...

I pick Dorian Mode, the saddest of all keys.

I like scales that have a minor third and sixth but a major seventh.

In a few days or weeks, I suppose we'll find out what John Justen's favorite scale is.

My timing is impeccable. I'll figure it out, and get back to you all in a couple of months.

I don't know scale & mode names. I like the one that goes c/d/d#/f/g/a/a# so much I have to stop myself using it all the time. Other good ones are c/d/d#/f/g/g#/a# and d/d#/f#/g/a/a#/c (this one is good because you can play noodly lead lines w/a sort of reedlike tone over alternating c min/d maj chords, and it kind of conjures up images of the pyramids, oases etc.)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 1 October 2005 10:07 (nineteen years ago)

The first one you mention is dorian, second one is aeolian (just the minor scale), third one is not one of the modes, but is something you can use over a dominant chord drone in a minor key (i.e. play that particular series of notes you've got up there over a D major chord in the key of G minor).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 1 October 2005 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

Pashmina's third one is a Harmonic Phrygian scale (a.k.a. the YNGWIE scale).

I couldn't pick a single scale; their use depends entirely on the context of the composition. Right now I'm feeling majorly Lydian. (And minorly Dorian, obv.)

I am all about natural minor.

Locrian baby!

dan perry, you make me feel like a natural minor.

The Dorian mode is pretty useful. Lot's of funk licks are Dorian, and if you see a minor chord in jazz, you can usually get away with using the Dorian scale. Or so I understand.

And of course there is "Impressions."

Please forgive my use of the word "licks" two posts up. This is the first and hopefully only time I have ever used this word.

As far as oriental exoticism goes, one I found good for that sort of thing was A, Bb, C#, D, E, F, G (or Gb).
