ElectroHarmonix Holy Grail.

John Justen, HUSH UP LITTLE MANG. (johnjusten), Sunday, 25 June 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

i got some digiverb pedal from boss, it's pretty nice. use it in conjunction with a delay pedal though otherwise it sounds fake (well they all do).

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 26 June 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

john, tell me more -- there's one on craigslit for cheap and about it i wondered

njkl, Monday, 26 June 2006 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

If you're looking for a really natural spring reverb, a good hall reverb, and the difficult to describe and vaguely usefull "Flerb" (flanged reverb), it's hard to beat. How cheap is cheap?

Seconding the Holy Grail.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Monday, 26 June 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

ok i think i might do it!!!!!!!!??? thanks guys!!!

jfidsdo, Monday, 26 June 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

digitech digiverb can be had on eBAY for about $65 and is very usable.

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

if you don't mind rack-mount units, the alesis quadraverb goes for about $130 on ebay and has pretty decent sounds as well as a lot more tweakability than the pedal-type reverbs

and you can get an alesis midiverb 3 or 4 for around $80-$100 on ebay

6335 (6335), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 19:41 (nineteen years ago)

yeah can we just turn this to discuss various reverb units and pedals? i;ve seen a few midiverbs for cheap but wondered if it were even worth it...

hfdjaskl, Tuesday, 27 June 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

digiverb is also good. One tricky aspect of the rackmount stuff is that it is generally line level in/out, not instrument level, so you have to make sure that your effects loop on your amp is line level, otherwise - noisiness/distortion ensues. The bad kind.

John Justen, HUSH UP LITTLE MANG. (johnjusten), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

sometimes when I think about buying a really good reverb, I wonder if it'd be cheaper to get a fucking church.

Then I cry

lots

I've got the Holy Grail and I'm not a huge fan - it's kind of noisy and has a pretty processed sound (when compared w/ something like a Fender Twin) - but I've never used it through an amp, so take that with a grain of salt.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

Edward, what are you using it with?

John Justen, Bataan death march of dimes. (johnjusten), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

I've used it on vocals & guitars, going directly into both a 4 track and a laptop. I'm actually kind of curious about how it sounds through an amp.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

probably better.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 29 June 2006 03:35 (nineteen years ago)

Edward III, there are massive impedence and input level issues with that setup.
It's high-impedence in, your mic is not.
It's expecting more output than your mic can deliver.
It's also not going to match well into your 4 track.

It's akin to me saying a twin reverb is a terrible amp, because it makes a terrible PA.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 20:27 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Hated the Holy Grail on my synth... sounded very fake-analog to me. Sold it and bought the Alesis NanoVerb, which is more to my liking.

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

Course dude did ask the question a month ago... unregistered guy, did you get one?

Confounded (Confounded), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Again, it's mean for a high-impedence guitar input.
Then to be run into a guitar amp.
That's all.

it works well when used as it was designed.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

yeah i need to reregister fdor this damn site, IMMs the only place i can post now

i didnt go for the holy grail and im really in no position to buy anything nowadays .... still looking out though. the alesis stuff sounds interesting but it too probably sounds 'processed'? im thinking now that rackmount is the way to go for me

hvjk, Wednesday, 2 August 2006 04:42 (nineteen years ago)

i bought an RV-5 and i'm much happier than i was with the holier grail.

electric sound of jim [and why not] (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

I've never heard a faker spring sound than the RV-5.
if you listen all it does is 'listen' for the initial attack and that triggers a 'sproing' sample. Any notes after that produce no 'splash.'

It offers significantly more control, but at the expense of realism or even tone, as I also found it thing sounding overall.

The GZeus (The GZeus), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

it works well when used as it was designed.

I prostrate.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

i'm about to get one of the alesis midiverbs. probably midiverb ii. they can be had for practically nothing. not sure how they sound on guitar but iirc kevin shields uses one

holy grails is not so good imo

hotel califor.nia (r1o natsume), Thursday, 6 May 2010 22:56 (fifteen years ago)

alesis is good. i used a lil nanoverb for several years and it served me well.

hobbes, Thursday, 6 May 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

holy grails is not so good imo

otm. probably the most overrated reverb pedal

hell and the handbaskets (electricsound), Thursday, 6 May 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)

kinda cool seeing reverb pedals pop up in general. i haven't really played electric guitar for a few years, but there weren't many options for guitar players outside of rack mount gear until recently, no?

hobbes, Thursday, 6 May 2010 23:36 (fifteen years ago)

no pedals, but for verb:

also would be keen on giving this a try:

yair the tc pedal looks kickass

hell and the handbaskets (electricsound), Thursday, 6 May 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

that does look sweet

is there a difference in sound between the midiverb and the nanoverb. my impression is the latter is just a smaller pared down version of the former

A. U. Khan (am0n), Friday, 7 May 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

i always thought the same, though i have never used a nanoverb

my midiverb needs to get used more :(

hell and the handbaskets (electricsound), Saturday, 8 May 2010 00:16 (fifteen years ago)

thats why i'm wary of picking up a rack effect. do u have a whole rackmount setup?

A. U. Khan (am0n), Saturday, 8 May 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

nanoverb is contemporaneous to the midiverb 4 and has exactly the same effect algorithms and the same 18 bit dacs. i think the only difference is the lack of led screen and less programs in the nanoverb. they can be had for so little now it might be worth buying one just to try it out

i think the earlier midiverbs have a lower bit rate conversion and supposedly have a more lo-fi sound

you could also get a little midi foot switch for live use

hotel califor.nia (r1o natsume), Saturday, 8 May 2010 18:30 (fifteen years ago)

do u have a whole rackmount setup?

no, the only rack unit in my "chain" is a roland re-3

chillwave of mutilation (electricsound), Saturday, 8 May 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

nanoverb is nice cause it's just like a 5x5x1 box that sits nicely next to the rest of your pedals. and in terms of functional limitations, i never felt like i needed more parameters to control its sound or whatever oh and yeah, i just use a footswitch, works like a charm.

hobbes, Saturday, 8 May 2010 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

holy grails is not so good imo

thirded, they're really weak

always liked these

ps I did eventually use the holy grail w/ a guitar + amp and still was not pleased

that expression pedal behavior is very interesting.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 05:01 (eleven years ago)

I wonder if it will linearly taper between any two states of the knobs. I would imagine so.

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 05:03 (eleven years ago)

did anyone else get suckered in by the strymon big sky? i've found it very difficult to fall in love with

doctrine the house (electricsound), Thursday, 5 June 2014 05:17 (eleven years ago)

I tried out the Big Sky and never really connected with it. I like Strymon's reverb in the Flint far more.

Suspect the simpler controls on the Flint make it faster to get something you want.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 5 June 2014 05:25 (eleven years ago)

Strymon's writing is a bit much

Sufjenga Cat Giffin (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 5 June 2014 05:30 (eleven years ago)

I appreciate just how far they're willing to go to make DSP-in-a-pedal a special thing rather than endless "it's all analog man" manifestos. I love the Flint and could be persuaded to deficit spend on a Lex, but past those two I'm surprised at how "meh" I find them. In the end I suppose it's just taste. When Mesa Boogie amps first became a thing, I couldn't get over how much they made everything sound like Boston (the band, not the Pixies). Bleak era, but a good time to buy perfectly good used silverface Deluxe Reverbs. A steal back then!
