vinyl to cdr / wav remasters on the cheap

bob has no money so he buys a pc w/ 1 x useless mini jack input.
he decides he needs to remaster various audio from cassette and vinyl. is it best to pick up a cdr recorder & upload to pc from resultant cdrs for taking hiss off etc,
outboard usb soundcard w/ stereo input ?or line 6 UX1 / UX2 tone port? - that would allow bob to play guitar into his pc as well - would that work with line feeds from cassette deck / turntable?
any dedicated shareware ? freeware I'm missing for these purposes?
any suggestions greatly appreciated.

wdnt a separate cdr recorder be far more expensive than an outboard soundcard? andl ess flexible re: guitar etc

i do it all with a cheapo sound blaster usb breakout card, has digital, 1/8" mono and rca stereo in, gets the job done with a little bit of noise but not too much (certainly better than the griffin fucking imic)

A great piece of software for this would be CoolEdit Pro, which is now Adobe Audition. You might find an old boxed copy of it for cheap in some dusty corner of a PC shop. Shareware and freeware for audio usually sucks a lot, in my experience.

yeah dude i still use cool edit pro 2.0 for this

with a "Creative Labs USB Sound Blaster MP3+ External Sound Card Sound System"

five years pass...

So I have used Peak for years, but Bias went out of business right when my old software became incompatible with my new Mac. I tried to purchase a new version of Peak LE but no go. I hate Audacity. I'm willing to spend some money, around 100 bucks. can anybody recommend me a WAV editor for OS X (10.5.8) that I can use to edit and track out CDR recordings of vinyl?

steinberg wavelab and adobe audition (you may remember it as cool edit pro) are both very good and will do the job

give audition a bit more time, i used to hate it, but it's alright once you get used to it

thank you - there was also some discussion on the I Hate Apple thread, I have looked into Fission and Amadeus. What I really need is something that displays peak level information. I'm waiting to find out if the Pro Amadeus does that, will look into those ones you mentioned as well.
