Guitar through audio interface?

I haven't even *tried* a bass amp yet... ;)

I am about to get an m-audio ozonic or possibly an alesis photon X25 or the novation or at any rate one of these controller/midi/audio interface combos. I know these all have inputs with preamps so you can play your guitar through them into your laptop for recording purposes. what I would like to know is whether this is a viable or reasonable option for playing live... I play mostly keyboards in my band but also would like to play some live guitar also, just wondering whether this approach would save me paying for a medicore-to-good guitar amp (or borrowing an amp off the other band..) and maybe getting something different(good) out of it? Thanks.

its doable, like plugging directly into a p.a. would be doable. but it would likely sound worse than the worse mic on the shittiest of the shitty guitar amp. not to mention you'd have a lag between playing something and hearing it back. and it's REALLY fucking nerdy.

yeah it would sound completely shite.

You could use a hardware amp modeller, i.e. Line 6 Pod, or a software amp modeller, of which I don't know any names, but I've heard there are good ones, and it would probably sound good.

yeah a preamp would be a must unless you're purposefully going for the thinnest tone possible

Yes, a simple floor multieffects box with amp models, like one o' them $60 Digitech RP series boxes, would be fine.

hahah, as per craigslist: Tech21 Tri-A.C. This is an anolog amp emulator. It does fender, vox/marshall, and mesa all pretty well. I have been using this to go direct to my churches PA.

You're all talking shit, particularly "blues" "dude". His last adendum is very telling. Fuck the 20th century.
