absolutely bizarre to me that this is not provided out of the box.. i get conflicting info, like the line-in can handle BOTH somehow??
anyway, how do YOU do it?

No Powerbook here, but in general I tend to put my microphones into either an outboard preamp or a normal mixer, then put the outputs from that into a USB interface.
You will usually not want to put a mic-level signal into something other than a preamp. Because many people who are serious about this sort of thing have preferences as to preamps, few are going to want to put a mic straight into a soundcard.
So your options are:
Mic > preamp > soundcard's line input
Mic > mixer > soundcard's line input
Mic > soundcard that has a preamp built in
Mic > preamp > USB or firewire interface
Mic > mixer > USB or firewire interface
Mic > USB or firewire interface that has a preamp built in
All that said, Samson has a USB mic that may serve for your needs. See here.

me = mic > edirol firewire interface (built in preamp) > macbook firewire port
works great. bit pricy, depends how good the sound quality you're looking for is really. as ever, you get what you pay for.
