Guitar techs / Baritone Jaguar Owners...a question

On a BariJag, can you fit it with regular baritone strings without a truss rod adjustment? I have read conflicting reports about this online, and was curious if anyone had personal experience..

Any time you make a significant string change, you really should have the guitar set-up. If nothing else, your intonation is going to be fucked up.

but from what i've heard, the baritone jag (as well as the Bass VI) was designed to go from standard baritone strings to bass vi strings without adjustment. but you are right, it would probably be safest to massage it a bit...

That makes no sense. ANY string change that doesn't match EXACT tension on EVERY string requires adjustment.

Hence my questioning..thanks for the response.

eleven months pass...

I picked up a Jag Baritone Custom today (the sunburst, slightly longer E-e) off a chap on eBay, but my untrained ears suspect it's got actual baritone B-b strings on it, like the Baritone Special (the black one.

A couple of questions - what strings (gauges, brands, funny little things I should look out for) should I get for the proper low-E action?

Why did Fender make two different guitars and call them both 'baritone'?

Why did they stop making them? Not that I'm complaining, seeing as I've got hold of one.

Anyway, string change = setup. Where's John's setup page gone..

Public service announcement: how to set up your own guitar/bass and not pay for others to do it...

That was obnoxiously difficult to find.

I'll try to get back on here and ponder your other questions later today. Right now I have to stare threateningly at a guy playing Smells Like Teen Spirit over and over again until he gets uncomfortable and leaves.

Thanks John, i really should bookmark that one, and buy some proper tools..

Brief update, it's definitely tuned to B, and the top two (or 3, I forget) strings are non-wound, so they must be baritone ones, right? I'm now puzzled as to why - did Fender ship any Customs tuned to B, or did the shop or the previous owner prefer it that way? The strings are disgusting, actually, for a guitar supposedly a year-old, and never gigged. And he hasn't left feedback for me. Anyway.

More love for 'baritone' Jaguars please.

mine is tuned E to E, but i'm thinking i want to switch it to B to B, which is how my danelectro is tuned. much love for the jag, i like tuning it to slightly muddy open tunings and then hitting chords and letting them ring out. sustains for days, as nigel tuffnel would say. pretty dark tone when compared to the danelectro, but a lot richer
