I have just started getting offered session stuff and I don't know what to charge. Is there some kind of norm? Is it time-based? Should I have them make me an offer?

Depends on where you are, I think. (NYC/LA/Nashville have higher rates than most places, for example) Probably should be time-based, but that means total time spent in the studio (in other words, if you're scheduled at 6 and they don't get around to you until 7, it all counts).

I am so totally unsure. Maybe I should tell them that.

DON'T TELL THEM THAT.

you have to sign a release form of some kind. this assigns your rights to your performance over to the payee. i would strongly suggest that you hold off from signing this until you have a cheque in your hands at the very least. if necessary, get up to the management office and do this transaction quid pro quo. in any event, expect to wait at least 4 months to get paid.

sorry friend, bitter experience speaking here...
