How does Animal Collective DO that?!

I don't understand how they get the vocals to rest in that perfect level of not necessarily being heard perfectly yet the lyrics are decipherable if you try. Is there an effect on them as well???

I'm listening to Grass right now. It's been blowing my mind for as long as its been out... I can't get over it. Don't hate, you can't do it.

I've seen both a Boss DD pedal and a Line 6 on their vocals (and other instruments) in live shows, not sure about recording.

Thoughts I had about mixing vocals the other day:

--a lot of rap music has the vocals surprisingly low, I assume it's so that by the time you turn it up loud enough to hear the words clearly, the beats are BANGIN'?

--I was listening to the Roisin Murphy album and the vocals are REALLY high in the mix. It makes sense, it's her album, but I wonder if it would be piercing at club volume?

On rap music, you're right.

And on the second point, a live show souldn't sound like most records. Hopefully the sound engineer at the show knows that.
