Does anyone know what this effect is? I've heard some suggestions that just using an ebow can make metallic computer-sounding effects, or that it could be an MXR Blue Box.

I'm gonna say John Justen is probably right on the money with the ring modulator idea, although I'm pretty nfamiliar with patch 32s. There are tons of different kinds of RMs, though, and certain kinds are touted as being more "alien/robot"-ish than others.
