Guitar effect question

I saw Cursive on their tour recently. Tim Kasher was using a guitar effect that... kinda made his guitar sound like R2D2...

Does anyone know what this effect is? I've heard some suggestions that just using an ebow can make metallic computer-sounding effects, or that it could be an MXR Blue Box.

Probably a ring modulator of some sort?

Alesis Air-FX, I think it's patch 32.

Nay. Ebow would more likely produce two types of effects that resemble a violin (one being more scarily/screechily effected than the other, but still).

I'm gonna say John Justen is probably right on the money with the ring modulator idea, although I'm pretty nfamiliar with patch 32s. There are tons of different kinds of RMs, though, and certain kinds are touted as being more "alien/robot"-ish than others.

Moogerfooger (Moog Mf-102) on "Slow Rate"..i think they have a sample on there page. Or try musician's friend. Sounds like R2..or IG-88...or the twain.

So what ring modulator would people recommend? I want my guitar to sound like a robot.

i think all of them do that to one extent or another. they can get expensive, since they're not too popular.

Open the MP3 link and look under the synthesis folder for the frequency anyalyzer. FUN!
