possibly noise bands should avoid real instruments until someone explains some of the basic not-to-dos to them :(

John will probably answer this soon.

Meanwhile play with the wood side, col legno tratto.

It can cost anywhere from ~50-60 bucks to like 400 bucks, at least when I used to play a lot, but I have no idea how much they cost now. Are you playing it "ala noise"? If so, it might be better to get some synthetic/fiberglass bows, they're much cheeeper, and you can break them with aplomb at the end of your show...

oof, thanks. even the bottom end of that is more than the bow's actually worth, i think. i shall acquire some cheap bows, i guess. maybe ebay.

and yeah, 'a la noise'. i'd like to be able to play it 'properly' but i doubt that's going to happen any time soon.

I had to reconfirm it just to make sure--looks like at the bottom end, around $30 bucks--around Manhattan, where I am, $50 is the low end, not sure how much in Le UK. :) Synthetic bows may be the way to go, although that may not save you much in horsehair.

You can google more info under "bows rehairing" rather than restringing.
