because I'm a shit mod and can't get the search function to work.

So anyway, we're rolling up on the 2007 NAMM show, and it's time to bow down/boggle at the things that the music industry is throwing at our consumer dollars. So far, I know about the lineup for F3nd3r, 1ban3z, and W4shburn, (and a bit of p34vey).

What's geeking you out? What's making you ill?

I've already picked out my "HOLY SHIT AWESOME" pick for the new stuff, but it doesn't appear to be linkable yet. Soon. It's cheap, and really fucking cool, and made by F3nd3r.

In the meantime, here's a shout out for a guitar that will probably be worthwhile for other reasons, but currently holds a special place in my heart because they finally re-introduced my favorite F3nd3r color ever, Sherwood Green Metallic:

PTP Vibro Champ reissue, $299 street?

Because that would be cool. In the meantime, the Peavy Mini Colossal seems intriguing.

Ditto Eastwood's Ampeg bass replica.

i'll just say this: the new f3nd3r recording amp looks awesome...havent heard it, and it's not exactly BRAND SPANKING new, but... anyone have more empirical experience with the thing?

AaronK (AaronK), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't seen any of those in the field yet, but imho the built-in comp and tubescreamer are not value-adds.

But here's a pic of that Eastwood bass...

That's WHY I like that bass.

Also that amp is incredibly expensive, has features NO ONE wants(OD, comp) and think of the people who will realise that it's actually got an SS power section.
It will fail, and I have dickish tendencies, so other people's misforture amuses me.

Uh, the Princeton Recording amp is all-tube, Gzeus, including the reverb driver.

I do think the built-in overdrive and compression was a bad idea tho.

Haven't seen anything on the Korg stuff yet.

TOMB07 (TOMBOT), Thursday, 18 January 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Thing is, it's really not hard to make(which I do beleive is something someone doing enough recording/playback to care should be able to do) and there are plentyof things on the market that can do this. Just don't use their other features...
Or you could get some old unpowered speakers, an old reciever, and get better sound than most studios...
Sorry. I just get annoyed by how shitty speaker cabs can be today.

And Fender's taking on Line6 with a modelling strat. Oh goodie.

WAHT DO I WIN?

http://frontlinelive.fender.com/blog/images//WinterNAMM2007/Champion_600.jpg

The Champion 600 is the perfect low-output tube amp for practicing and recording, with a 6” speaker, simple controls, and that classic Fender “two-tone” look—brown and blonde vinyl covering, leather strap handle, and red jewel pilot light. The low-gain circuit of the original was developed in conjunction with lap steels; the new Champion 600 has been updated to suit the needs of most guitarists with its 12AX7 and 6V6 tubes offering a bit more of that dynamic, natural overdrive when cranked.

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 18 January 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

J0hn Just3n,

I have an irrational hatred of Line 6. Is this warranted, in your professional opinion?

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, the Champion 600 was my pick for teh super-coolness. You win my respect and admiration, which unfortunately, isn't worth shit.

Matt, with the exception of the delay pedal, you are completely accurate in your opinion. (based mainly on my burning hatred of their amps.)

attack all monsters (skowly), Thursday, 18 January 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

Jumping in re Line 6 and irrational hatred.

I have a Variax and an XT among lots of other vintage stuff. When I bought the XT, for example, I compared it's
model of the Rat to my old Rat. If there was a difference, I couldn't hear it. As for the amp modelling, there's a familiar one that's been used all over records by metal and hard rock bands trying to save money in the studio -- the XT take on the Marshall JCM 900. I hear it a lot and it makes the records of a kind but that's more the work of the musicians and engineers who go for the stock sound. Mind you, it's not a bad sound.

However, I've found that there is a lot in the device that the standard doesn't tap. I've used it to get very early-'70's tones that are totally convincing. I'm also a fan of the Variax, said as someone with a couple of old Gibsons.

However, never had qualms with digitial equipment. I like the Adrenalinn also. Use it even more, in fact.

Looks like the best NAMM show for h/w synthesizers for a long long time. New produkt from Waldorf, Arturia (!) (a box that hosts their modeled moog modular, apr 2600, cs80 and prophet 5, w/the ability to mix and match bits from each virtual instrument by the look of it - $3000 though, ugh.) couple of vaguely interesting new bits from Korg, incl something that looks like a cut-down version of their Oasys, an updated version of Roland's V-Synth (which I think is gr8, and sadly the only decent synth they've come out w/for years and years and years. A bunch of new boutique analog modular hardware.

am0n (am0n), Sunday, 21 January 2007 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

Why do you think that's going to be shit, but doubt me when I say the Variaxe is shit?
Roland's VG processors are alot more convincing than anything Line 6 ever did and they've been at it longer.

Lukewarm Watery G. Tornado, Enlarges Christs OrganIsm (The GZeus), Sunday, 21 January 2007 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

Assuming that was directed my way...

A) I've had multiple people I trust, people that wouldn't have any predisposition towards Line 6 say they were suprised how good the Variax was (while simultaneously saying that they were also sure it would fail.)

B) Fender has a long history of fucking up anything that lies outside of their skillset, which is guitar and amp-building, NOT DIGITAL EFFECTS.

C) The whole project has loser written into it from the get go. It's an American made guitar built to not fit the wishes or desires of the sort of people who buy American Fenders. It also screams "Desperately trying to catch up with a product that is already available". It's entering competition for a niche market that barely exists, and isn't ever going to become significant.

Seriously, it's the worst idea ever, perhaps Fender's lamest move in years, and it will fail miserably. The only way it'll make it past this calender year is if they sell so few initially that they have to keep them in the price sheet just to get rid of them.

John Justen says Toonces was one of the most talented cats on televison (johnjus, Sunday, 21 January 2007 05:33 (eighteen years ago)

It's an American made guitar built to not fit the wishes or desires of the sort of people who buy American Fenders.

POINT. Though I'd exepect MIMs to follow down the road, with the USA VG really just there to establish a halo of credibility.

Speaking of MIM, it's not this year's news but holy shit this Baja Telecaster. If you like your necks thin, ignore it, but otherwise ignore it at your peril.

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Sunday, 21 January 2007 05:52 (eighteen years ago)

The VG part is Roland, fender just makes the guitar part.
It WILL fail horrendously.

The Variax is great for people how do alot of switching and have their action as low as possible.
What i'm getting at is it doesn't repsond well to dynamics(play hard enough and it goes all weird) and picking position doesn't matter.
The tones are "GOOD LORD IT"S A *insert guitar model*. YOU WILL NOT MISTAKE IT FOR ANYTHING BUT A *insert guitar model* TONE. IT SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE A *insert guitar model* THAT IF YOU PLAY A REAL *insert guitar model* YOU'LL IMMEDIATELY NOTICE HOW MUCH MORE VERSATILE THE REAL THING IS." Same for the other models.
I'm sorry dude, but..well, at least try to hide your doubt when someone expresses that degree of beleif in the suck(or not suck) of a product.I mean...I no one likes seeing "what the fuck are you smoking?" in the eyes of their friends...
