Replacement bandmates - Is it ever the same?

We just started working with a new bass player. Have had a few practices, she plays really great, picks up the songs really fast, etc., and it sounds pretty good, but the songs feel completely different to me, even when she's playing the old bass player's part. Is this just inevitable? Band chemistry changes and that's that?

I think that you have to accept that it'll never be exactly the same. If there are key bits that HAVE to be the same as before, then you could work with her to try and get closer to the old feel, but unless something really jars, I wouldn't bother. Let her bed in and see what happens - I reckon it's just a case of getting familiar and comfortable with her playing style.

So you're thinking you're going to have change up your stuff just a little bit to make it work better?

nah, never the same.

sometimes better!

Yeah, it's actually quite creepy if it's exactly the same. You can only really hope for better.

We're about to find this out and hoping it will be a Sugababes situation not an Atomic Kitten situation.

Try working on something completely new, which will allow you to see how you feel about something you have no preconceptions about.

We have had three drummers play with us -- never the same, always better. Our first drummer was good, but kind of robotic and refused to do anything he found tacky, i.e. anything interesting. THe second guy who played drums with us was just a replacement for one show. He was truly awesome, but a teenager and really concerned with being incredibly flash all the time. Our third and final drummer is tasteful AND a badass. Thank heaven for finding the perfect mix.

i thought dr c said "get her in bed and see what happens" which actually is sometimes OTM, i guess.

Yeah it's tough. On some songs what the old bassist played was SO right, and even when I get the new bassist to play almost exactly the same thing the feel and the phrasing are never the same.

haha xpost

you'll probably find the same when you get her in bed xpost

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the phrasing is never gonna be the same in bed.
