Sound card Hiss

I've just bought an Edirol UA-20 soundcard off a friend and I've noticed that whenever I play any audio, MP3 or otherwise, it comes out granularly and hissy. This is very annoying indeed. The sound isn't constant, it's just anything that plays sounds shit.

Any ideas?

Driver?
Might be broken/incompatible... Have you tested it on another comp?

not yet - i only just installed the drivers and plugged it in. i was using it to make a few tunes and then i listened to some neutral milk hotel demos so i didn't notice it at first. now i've got winamp running and everything's got this granular background fuzz.

i just restarted the computer and it sounds ok. hmm... very strange. i don't want this happening too often. Also, the way I used to change the output volume (clicking in the right hand corner on the little speaker icon) has changed and i don't know how to do it.

most "pro" sound devices don't support the Windows Mixer controls. so this is prolly to spec.
