it am portable hd

Lukewarm Watery G. Tornado; Vampires Eat Christians (The GZeus), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Hm. I guess it would be convenient for those times when you don't have a laptop handy and need something larger and more awkward?

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, what's the confusing part? It's a mixer you can use as a USB input, or, if you're not with your computer, record stuff straight to your iPod -- I assume people would use it mostly to do rough takes of rehearsals and jams, then maybe listen to them on the train the next day. I don't exactly want one, but it's certainly not the most arcane recording product I've ever seen (especially for less than $200).

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:10 (eighteen years ago)

xpost -- in terms of size and durability, this would be way handier to toss into your backpack than a laptop, mixer, and/or separate audio interface!

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 25 January 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

That looks like something that fills an exceedingly small niche. I'm guessing that they're banking on selling it to ultra-amateur recording folks who don't really know what they're looking for. As I am tirelessly reminded by where I work, there are plenty of people making music out there that never walk into a music store, after all.

This thing is so cool, finally someone did this!

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 25 January 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

i got that beat. this thing:

http://www.midia.co.jp/products/ni/kore/images/kore_main_s.jpg

has been on my desk for about a month now, it looks cool as shit, but i have no clue how to use it.

pabs (Pablo A), Thursday, 25 January 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

what is it, plug-in twiddler?

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

it controls the Kore software, which is a plug-in host....but it's also a plug-in itself. also it has transport controls, but i can't figure out how to actually make it play sound. i think the software can play an imported midi file, but you can't actually MAKE a midi file....

but it looks sweet

pabs (Pablo A), Thursday, 25 January 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

Actually this looks exactly like something I'd want, more or less for the reasons Nabisco goes into. The built-in iBook mic is a little too limiting, it's annoying to transfer music from 4tracks/minidiscs to computer files, and I don't have anything like a USB mixer. And I have this 40gig iPod with 15 gigs free these days, since I don't carry around as much music as I used to.

So the amateurish nature of the recording equipment seems good. When I'm trying to get a "professional" sound, I have friends who have the gear and the know-how to make it happen; I want to catch rehearsals with a minimum of fuss, and if some good recordings come out of it, so much the better. The Basement Tapes are something of the ideal of what I'm looking for.

JJ, if you have any better ideas for how to achieve something like that, then I'd love to hear it...

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

There are a few problems I see with a product like that. First of all, it requires that you have an iPod. Most if not all people who have iPods have a computer already. If mobility isn't an issue the argument for a product like this is nil.

On the mobility point, laptops are not an arduous accessory, and there plenty of bus powered audio interfaces that are cheaper than this, and provide the ability to use a software interface which is much more user friendly.

But they'll probably sell a few of these i reckon.

pabs (Pablo A), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Pabs, the difference between this and carrying a laptop + small interface is that this thing's a mixer: you can set up your sound on the spot and drop straight to your iPod to review, like, on your way home.

Versus a laptop, where your interface is gonig to give you less in the way of level adjustment, and probably no EQ, and you'll have to ready your software and then later probably dump the files to your iPod for listening, plus now you're carrying $1800 of equipment around with you instead of like $200. (Not counting iPod cost cause you're probably carrying that either way.)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not saying that it's a *bad* idea. I'm saying that it's a niche of a niche. And we haven't brought up portable HD recorders yet either.

Also I'm looking at this from a product positioning standpoint. Just because you or I may see a valid use case for this thing does not mean it's a good idea to make it.

pabs (Pablo A), Thursday, 25 January 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

For $130 more, you can buy this:

John Justen is fucking sick of his username (johnjusten), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Built in X/Y condensers, also has shared 1/4"/XLR jacks, 4 tracks for mulittracking, removeable media, selectable recording quality, usb interface, and built in effects/eqing/compression/etc.

Part of my skepticism is that I'd like to know who is manufacturing the board for Belkin, particularly the mic pres, pots, etc. The old garbage in, garbage out argument, because I'm guessing it's quality of components is dubious at best.

John Justen is fucking sick of his username (johnjusten), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

this is pretty stupid if it's limited for use wtih ipods. if you can use any portable recording medium, slightly less stupid.

AaronK (AaronK), Thursday, 25 January 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

For $130 more, you can buy this:

Damn you John Justen! Those are really sexy and insanely inexpensive for what they are.

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

Aaron, it says it works as a USB interface, so there's at least the computer option.

Those hand-held XY recorders seem great -- they're continually raving about different ones in Sound on Sound -- but of course the advantages of the thing under discussion are that (a) you can mix with it, rather than needing to get a good sound in the room, and (b) you can just run your effects box, modeler, drum machine, or synth straight into it, if you're doing sketches or working quietly or whatever.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

to review, like, on your way home.

FINALLY I CAN REVIEW ON THE WAY HOME

am0n (am0n), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

Response to B) in nabiscos post: The Zoom has 2 inputs for such stuff on the non-mic end of it, so that's not really an issue.

On the A) side (less cut and dried, I know), yeah, it doesn't have a mixer per se, but the mix/eq menu is fairly easy to navigate, and I'm pretty sure you can save preset room EQ's (I don't have one here right now to verfiy this). Also, the fact that the other one has knobs instead of jog-wheels gains in the realm of quick and easy, but loses in the realm of making things sound good instead of adequate, I think.

John Justen is fucking sick of his username (johnjusten), Friday, 26 January 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

i'd never use this thing but i kinda dig it

jimbo (electricsound), Friday, 26 January 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

OK, well played, John.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 26 January 2007 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

Oh right, I totally forgot that thing had a couple inputs in addition to the mics! Yeah, if you were looking for really quick and easy rehearsal tapes / jams / sketches, that'd be a godsend.

I also seem to remember SOS reviewers being all like "I was supposed to do pro recordings of an orchestra, so I just threw this on a table to see how it'd sound, and it was pretty much as good as my proper job."

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 26 January 2007 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

Nabisco, if you throw one more quote like that around I will be out $300.

pabs (Pablo A), Friday, 26 January 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

The Keifer actually makes a kind of sense to me. He's a big Gibson collector and supporter, owns a studio, and gives Gibson relatively low-cost publicity. Outside of the music world his name is certainly better-known.

The Blunt offends me much more, though on the upside the Seagull headstock makes it look kind of like a dick, which is fitting. But wtf why not a Jason Mraz?

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Friday, 26 January 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

But...Why would they make a product that's associated with an amateur musician? It won't sell.
I should get a siganture guitar for supporting good brands even when I myself can't afford to get all the ones I want!...or something... I dunno. Is that more insane?
Because it sounds slightly less insane to me, but then I'm insane.

Lukewarm Watery G. Tornado; Vampires Eat Christians (The GZeus), Friday, 26 January 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

But...Why would they make a product that's associated with an amateur musician? It won't sell.

It doesn't need to. Exactly how many of these do you think they're going to make?

The point of this one is to generate some publicity, not to sell a lot of Gibson Kiefers.

hearditonthexico (rogermexico), Saturday, 27 January 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

I hate Gibson.
They don't make musical instruments.

To achieve the price range of $50 to $200, which he called the "sweet spot" for mass merchandising, [Gibson] is having its [cheapo git-boxes] made in China, where it already has a manufacturing plant to handle its Epiphone line, which has been its lower-priced brand, selling at $500 and up.

Has Gibson hit critical sino-mass, GZ?

It would be cooler with 4 necks, arranged in an "X" fashion. And a ball-bearing swivel on the back. And large, scythe-like blades on the headstocks, so that you could whirl the guitar and shred the audience while you shred massive lix.
