Show and Tell about your instruments.

Ed, Sunday, 18 March 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

the one on the left has pickups and has just been acquired (also has a harder bridge and much lower action). I will probably be selling the non-pickup one. Both are a joy to really rich tone. I'd like to think they went well with my singing voice, but unfortunately I am not a great singer.

The Big Marshall is Kate's I'm borrowing it whilst I work out what to do about amplification.

WTF @ flickr's own linking code. it's not as wide as that IRL. I finished sanding and staining the upper cabinet, I'll try and take another pic tonight. Grant @ Wiard synthesizer is re-introducing the bigger sized modules, so I'll be able to fill the empty spaces up, cheers cheers etc.

Here is a photo of me not actually shoving a drumstick up my nose (the shadow proves it!) behind my current kit - a 60s Rogers with a 60s Gretsch snare. Beat-to-hell, very little original hardware, but sounds great.

ooooooh, i've got a alesis mmt8, is the hr16 a drum machine? they look almost identical.

zappi, Monday, 26 March 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, they're all designed to be used together. I have the MMT-8 and a HR16B (same drum machine with slightly trendier 1980's samples), but I need to find a couple of 9V 1A AC power adaptors.

S-, Monday, 26 March 2007 07:28 (eighteen years ago)

Huh, I also own an HR-16.

ha, is that grey thing in the middle a WWII oscillator?

zappi, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

It's some kind of frequency analyzer. Unfortunately I've never been able to get it to do anything useful so I just keep it there because I think it looks nice. But I have some other ancient test equipment like several really nice sounding tube bandpass filters. My wife is not quite as fond of these things as I am though.

roland rs-09 - i love the string sound that doesn't quite sound "real"; the organ sound is wonderful, and the chorus is effective, too

outdoor_miner, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

That ARP needs an astrocat.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 26 April 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

I've missed having a 12-string around so in lieu of spending $$$ on a Mosrite 12, I purchased one of these:

http://www.fender.com/products/prod_images/guitars/0278900500_md.jpg

Quite like it so far.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 26 April 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

hey Masonic, what means that? did a google search and came up sort of empty.

outdoor_miner, Thursday, 26 April 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

Good lord, that's a strange looking thing. Is it any good, Chris?

I played a vintage Fender 12 at VAG Guitars on Denmark Street last week while helping Ed try out phaser pedals and OMG the loveliness.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

VAR Guitars, not VAG Guitars, ha ha ha. Oh dear.

Masonic Boom, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

Good lord, that's a strange looking thing. Is it any good, Chris?

Once you get past the initial "what the hell is THAT?" reaction, it's actually pretty nice - towards the upper end of Fender build quality (for the gearspotters out there it's labelled "Crafted in Japan" instead of "Made in Japan"). It's a couple years old, but apparently it had never been played - the tags were still on the headstock.

I've been wanting a solid-body 12 string for awhile and since I can't afford a Mosrite or one of the original Fender XIIs it was a fair compromise. Basically I wanted something that would stay reasonably in tune ("reasonably" because after all it's a 12-string), sound decent through my amps, and wouldn't have to fuss with much. So far, I've been very happy. I'll have a full report after band practise on Sunday.

New guitar:

n/a, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

World's most minute guitar question: As you can see, the pickup switch on my new guitar is on the top, instead of on the bottom. However, I keep hitting it and accidentally switching pickups while playing. Can anyone recommend a simple way of securing the pickup switch without actually disabling it? Like something I can wrap around it, preferably without damaging the body of the guitar, to keep the switch in the middle position?

n/a, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

unscrew the plastic cap and the switch should be short enough that you won't be hitting it, and if you do it'll need more leverage to actually switch it. That works on my SG, although the switch is in the usual place on that, but I tend to hit it on the downstroke.

Or the old favourite - gaffer tape.

But Nick, what about rich, spacious, F4ke F!ctions SEMI-HOLLOW sound? Won't this change everything?

nabisco, Thursday, 17 May 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Or well I feel like I've seen something where you were playing a standard electric before, but I always figured that unruly semihollow-with-p90s sound was like YR THING and whatnot.

nabisco, Thursday, 17 May 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

I know. But that guitar is fucked up now.

;_;

n/a, Friday, 18 May 2007 12:16 (seventeen years ago)

Aww: next time you've saved up a bit, get one of those Ibanez Artcore semi-hollows and have p90s put in! That might get a little over the top with the "unruly," but it wouldn't cost you that much.

nabisco, Friday, 18 May 2007 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

hey, I have a Roland RS-09 as well, the earlier version:

http://acuterecords.com/5.jpg

a bit dark but what yr seeing is a Roland RS09, Sequential Prophet 600, K2000 on top an Arp 2600. Next to it is a Hohner Pianet and a sequential drum tracks. Currently leant out: Oberheim DMX w/ MIDI and Arp String Ensemble. Off screen to the right, Farfisa Combo and Elka Combo. To the left there is a scanner, inkjet printer and laser printer.

Then there's the other side:

which has the computer and MPC1000. And a Paul Haig record.

Summer's even worse when I put the AC unit in the window. And NYC is not the cleanest place, so I'm constantly fighting dust. I opened up my computer to do some upgrades a few months ago and it was amazing the whole thing still worked, it was totally caked in dust.
