I want to start recording music, What are the pros and cons of the various Mac based recording packages? School me, the only recording I have done was with ADAT and a big desk.

Ed, Monday, 19 March 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

Are you just recording audio, or do you need midi sequencing as well?

Pashmina, Monday, 19 March 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not entirely sure, just audio, although I am playing around with soft synths (although mainly as effects right now)

Ed, Monday, 19 March 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

My (brief) take:

Cubase - Waste of time last time I tried it on a Mac. Buggy and can't use Audio Units. Pretty easy to use though.

Digital Performer - Seems to be really fantastic for audio editing, but fairly obtusely layed out compared to other packages. Tends to feel cramped on anything other than a huge screen too. Damn good program for the money if you can get your head around it though.

Logic - Great bundled instruments and effects. Relatively easy to use once you get into its paradigm. The whole program is starting to feel a little long in the tooth though. Setting some stuff up is a pain in the arse because of the 'environments' system. There's some talk of Apple taking the best bits of Logic and building a new replacement, so I'd keep an eye out for that.

Pro Tools - Fantastic audio editing but shitty support for virtual instruments and AU/VST effects. It also sucks that you have to use M-Audio or Digidesign hardware with it.

Ableton Live - Very easy to use. Incredibly nice routing options. The audio editing is a bit subpar, and its a computer hog compared to the other packages - but I still love it.

Hope that helps.

Second on the load hog of Ableton Live--yikes. That thing drags like crazy--ugh.

Jubalique die Zitronen, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 01:34 (eighteen years ago)

I would probably strike protools off out of hand as a large proportion of my working life is spent dealing with Avid's lock in style of working.

Ed, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 10:10 (eighteen years ago)

Honestly, though, upon reflection--Ableton may not be so bad a choice, as it's super accessible, can use Audio units, and is cheaper than Logic or DP or ProTools. It's also more fun, IMO. Just watch out for the cpu loads, but that happens for me with Logic 7 as well.

Jubalique die Zitronen, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

I think I am going to try out Live and DP, I've picked up a cheap MOTU interface so it might be well integrated into DP.

Ed, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

ableton + audacity = illustrator + photoshop

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I swear by Cubase. But I only use it as a recording program, not mucking about with the sequencing and stuff.

Masonic Boom, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

shitty support for virtual instruments and AU/VST effects

this isn't so much the case since v7.0 - although some particular instruments (i.e. Native Instruments) cause trouble.

I just started using Cubase Studio 4 (upgraded to 4.5). It's really good, but then again, I probably use < 10% of the features. My workflow is as follows: record synths/drum machines as MIDI, edit the notes/arrange the tracks, run the MIDI back out to the machines and record the audio, one track at a time. The built-in effects work fine for what I do, and the only VSTi that I use is Battery 3.

Ver. 5 is coming out this month, but it won't run on my circa 2005 Powerbook, and offers nothing I would ever use anyway.

three weeks pass...

what are people's thoughts on Nuendo? Most of my pals use it, but it rarely gets mentioned as a DAW. I've just booted it up and it'#s not bad, but then I've been using Acid to sequence tracks so far. Worthwhile, or better to use something else?

the next grozart, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 16:42 (sixteen years ago)

I need a replacement for Cubase - something that can record live tracks and play nice with Reason - plus give me the kind of soundwave editing capabilities that I need.

I ffffing love Cubase and would love to continue using it, but it just does not work on this laptop, and cannot justify spending £1000 to get a new laptop just to run it.

i need help choosing a new system.

thusfar i've only used garageband. i record off my keyboard, a lot of vocals, and i edit a lot/lots of effects.

i'd like instrument/percussion pre-set abilities as well -- in fact, i might use these a lot. but i'm not very smart when it comes to deciphering a bunch of jargon.

what do i get?

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

logic. it does basically everything you want it to, and comes bundled with some pretty good soft synths and very good vst effects. and once you start getting into the environment features it becomes very powerful. plus it's compatible with most of garageband's features.

the only complaint i have is that logic 8 can be quite buggy, a small price to pay for software that does practically everything and anything. you just have to learn to be patient and treat it with care and it'll work fine.

rio (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 1 April 2009 21:31 (sixteen years ago)

awesome, this is kind of what i've gathered.

but do you mean, buggy as in it will delete my data? i can deal with some bugs, as long as my stuff isn't ruined

Surmounter, Wednesday, 1 April 2009 21:33 (sixteen years ago)

actually, you know what, FUCK LOGIC.

it is so fucking buggy. i've been working on this track over the last couple of days, everytime it crashes and i restart, the midi channels have reset themselves and decided not to send anything out anymore, mixer channels suddenly decide to stop sending out any audio whatsoever, seriously fuck this piece of fucking shit software. i am literally fuming right now to the point of throwing my laptop against the fucking wall.

rio (r1o natsume), Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

ok see? i can't do that

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

no. pro tools i guess

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)

i am happy to accept that this is a problem with my system. it's less than a year old, with more than enough of the specs required to run logic. and it's not like i am doing anything particularly taxing on the cpu, just a couple of midi channels and the rest is audio i've recorded. how can they get away with this shit?

rio (r1o natsume), Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

honestly that sounds like a nightmare.

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

i just went through my folders and deleted everything i ever recorded with logic. gone. i know i will regret this in the morning but in the words of joe crow "got to move on some time, and it's about time"

rio (r1o natsume), Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

omg wau

Surmounter, Thursday, 2 April 2009 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

i just learned how to use logic. seems pretty easy/cool.

finally got PT8 up and running, like it so far. the soft piano that comes with it actually sounds pretty good and i'm v hard to please when it comes to this sort of thing. haven't had a chance to try out any of the elastic pitch & time stuff yet though.

oh and anyone who has a convolution reverb plug needs to download these immediately: http://rekkerd.org/acousticas-releases-bricasti-m7-irs/

did i say immediately? do it NOW

Adobe Audition???

I know zilch about digital recording/editing. But no one mentioned it here. Thought I'd ask.

Ok, I just demo'ed Record by Propellerheads and I don't get it. What were they thinking?!

Jubalique die Zitronen, Friday, 23 October 2009 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

elucidate

would s*m*a*s*h (electricsound), Friday, 23 October 2009 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

It's like Reason, only with audio. So the controls, the editing approach, everything, it's just Reason, same goofy fx, weird workflow, etc! And I like Reason alot, most of our first album was done on it. BUT you'd think that they'd make it easier, for example, to futz with samples (e.g. drag and drop in) or AU's or... pick your poison. But instead, it's as if someone bolted on an audio tracker into Reason with all of its soft synth-ness. So like on Eq you have these fiddly knobs without the fine control over frequency you get with any other DAW. That said, I love the sound of the faux-SSL mixer, but other than that, I kinda wish they'd put more thought into it.

Jubalique die Zitronen, Friday, 23 October 2009 02:38 (fifteen years ago)

that all sounds reasonable.. tbh i'd be less 'what were they thinking' as much as 'i hope they have bigger plans for v2' - i like what it does but yeah there are limitations that are problematic from both sides. if they were trying to find a midground between PT and Live they've slightly missed the mark but that's not to say they won't get there

would s*m*a*s*h (electricsound), Friday, 23 October 2009 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, for me, it's both "what were they thinking" and "i hoped for more"--i like reason alot, so it's hard for me to figure out the purpose of this program vs. logic + live. nothing this does is that much better, so why make it at all?
