A cautionary tale (check yer wiring)

I was fucking around in the studio this evening, I had a couple of balanced jacks in the direct outs round the back of the mackie mixer, w/metal plug bodies - I reach to pull them out and got an electric shock! I got the multimeter, and checked the voltage between the casing of the mixer and earth - 109V AC. I unplugged everything, and went though it, eventually finding a fucked power strip that the mackie & a few other items were plugged into. It's obviously developed some fault, PLUS the earth wire has frayed and broken inside the plug. The strip itself, the plug and the wire all appeared to be in good condition, though it's one of my older ones. I threw it in the bin, I'll make up another one tomorrow.

I'm too tired to do anything more now, but tomorrow night I'm going through all my power cables and strips, and making sure all of the earth connections are tight & solid, I could have been killed there, 109V AC is easily enough!

Check yr power wiring, people!

Ouch, glad it wasn't more series. Kate to thread about being poleaxed by a dodgy vox without missing a beat.

That was a Merkin Vox that wasn't grounded at all - Merkin power doesn't require grounding, in fact a lot of their plugs are designed without it.

If by "merkin", you mean "American", that isn't true at all.
