Recommend me an amp I can get ... at Guitar Center ;_;

We had a fire at our practice space that ruined almost all of our equipment. We have shows on the 13th and 19th. This means I am trying to replace most of my equipment all at once. I am poor. I have birthday money coming in, which I am planning to use to get a new (used) guitar and PA equipment for once we have a new practice space. This leaves little $$$ over for an amp. However, I have a Guitar Center credit card. Which is why I am limiting this to amps I can find at Guitar Center. Which I know is lame, but let's try and get past that.

What I am looking for:

* Something in the 30-40 watt range (needs to be loud enough to play shows at bars that don't mic amps)
* Combo amp (we go to shows in my 4-door Corolla, so we need space)
* I am prejudiced against built-in effects and modeling amps. The simpler, the better, though I do need reverb.
* I like a little grit in my tone, so I've mainly been looking at tube amps.
* Would prefer to spend no more than $700 (like I said, I'm poor).

I was looking at the Vox AC-15, which sounded good, but I was worried didn't get loud enough for noisy bars. I was also looking at the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, which sounded great to my ears, but I was overwhelmed by the vast amount of Fender combo amps stocked at Guitar Center.

Any suggestions?

Peavey Classic 30 (or better yet, Delta Blues w/15", which they may not stock.)

You might also want to take a look at the Blues Deluxe reissue (if you're willing to spring about $825, play the Blues Deville 410 reissue w/the blue back alnico 10s.)

Not crazy about modern Vox, but lots of people are, so (shoulder shrug?)

More later, I'm dogsitting.

John Justen, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

Really? I had just kind of assumed that Peavey = shit, but I don't really know what I was basing that on.

n/a, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

No, the tube Peavey stuff has really come a long way. There's still an (inaccurate, I think) bias against it in some circles, but the logo is only held on by two screws, so fuck it.

I think you still have my email, so hit me up if you have any specific questions, BTW.

John Justen, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

I think they'll order anything by a company they work with - they're ordering the same Ampeg bass amp that we used to have for Sarah.

n/a, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Meaning they could order the Delta Blues if they don't have it in stock.

n/a, Saturday, 5 May 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

i think i started a "why is the hot rod so hated?" thread here a few months back, but before mine fried out after many many years of loyal service and i felt like trading up, i found it to be a pretty versatile, quality amp, especially for the money. folks direct a lotta ire towards the built-in o/d sounds, but that's easily worked around via pedal (i had nothing against those sounds, fwiw - lots of people complimented me on my tone when i was using that amp).

pretzel walrus, Sunday, 6 May 2007 01:38 (eighteen years ago)

and it can get loud as shit, so there's not too much danger of getting lost in a bar.

pretzel walrus, Sunday, 6 May 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

Guitar Center out here was running a sale on the Vox AC-15CC for $499.

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 7 May 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think that's the one I tried out but was worried wasn't quite loud enough.

My friend is selling his Peavey Classic 50, I'm going to try it out tonight.

n/a, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 12:31 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I've never had any particular problem with the Hot Rod. Good as it gets for the price I'd say.

Hurting 2, Friday, 11 May 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

I got a Fender Deluxe Reverb from GC last year and I absolutely love it.

darin, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

Great amp, but at 22 watts, it might suffer a bit live.

John Justen, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

What amp did you have before that you liked? Even if it's not carried by GC/too much $$$$, it might help us guess what sort of tone yer looking for.

John Justen, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

I've been using Kustom amps for the past few years - first an old '70's tuck-and-roll head and cabinet, then one of the new '36 Coupes, which looked a little goofy but sounded good.

For the past week I've been trying and mostly failing to get a good sound with my new Fender Toronado running through the Peavey Classic 50. I think I'm just used to the dirty bassiness of my old semihollowbody (RIP) running through the Kustoms. New set-up sounds too clean and emphasizes all of my fuck-ups.

two years pass...

turned my beloved kustom combo amp on standby this afternoon, start changing my guitar strings, five minutes later i turn around and smoke is billowing out of the amp. already had it repaired extensively once so i'm probably just going to get something new or "new." if anyone wants to recommend brands or specific models, please let me know. my specifications are pretty similar to those listed in my first post above.

some dude out in the burbs is selling a delta blues on craigslist for $350, might check it out based on previous recommendations

congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 15 August 2009 04:37 (fifteen years ago)

oh it doesn't need to be something i can get at guitar center this time. just something i can locate in the chicago area.

congratulations (n/a), Saturday, 15 August 2009 04:38 (fifteen years ago)

i fucking hate amp shopping

congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 16 August 2009 13:01 (fifteen years ago)

went to like four guitar stores yesterday, the only amp i tried and loved was a 1968 ampeg reverberocket, which sounds amazing but of course is just expensive enough that i feel guilty about spending that much money but not so expensive that i can just dismiss it as being out of my price range. now i wish i had just bought the thing but it was at the first store i went to. i'll probably end up going back for it tomorrow.

congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 16 August 2009 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

I've got a '62 or so Ampeg Reverb-O-Rocket and I would replace it instantly no matter what the cost. Highly recommend it.

eleven months pass...

music dudes, I have this amp I am trying to sell on craigslist on behalf of a friend. I know nothing about amps. it's a marshall mg15dfx or something like that. has digital effects and stuff.

when I plug it in and turn it on it makes a loud pop. is that normal? are there any ways I can test this amp? I have an iPod and a 1/8-1/4 connector and cables. is that going to bring the lols?

dyao, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 12:15 (fourteen years ago)

sorry to show up so late - been busy. a loud pop is not all that bizarre on turn on. there should be a knob that says master (taking your know nothing about amps at face value plz do not feel slighted). make sure that is turned down when you turn the amp on and see if it still happens.

if yer still wanting to test the amp via ipod, plug it in, but turn the ipod output down to about 40% maybe. then make sure that A) the channel switch is not engaged (if this means nothing, there should be a green led on the front of the amp that turns red when you press a switch. you want it to be green when you do this.) B) the master level knob is up. C) if nothing is happening, look for a know that says gain and turn that up.

iirc tusc rose out of the ashes of Earth Sound Research, which in turn rose out of the ashes of Plush amps. I have an Earth G-2000 head and it is SUPER AWESOME, so good on you dude!

Does it have vibrato? the earth vibrato is magical, prob my favorite circuit w.the magnatone stuff coming in at a close second.

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 2 September 2010 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

On the ... at Guitar Center front, I try not to go into that place, but the guy named Brick at 14th street who sold me a Monotron the other day was pretty cool.

i love how those ESR heads look like bad bar furniture. i've never heard one tho.

i mean how cool

arby's, Thursday, 2 September 2010 21:51 (fourteen years ago)

my ESR needs to be recased, i had two and sold the cleaner looking one because i could give exactly zero fucks about collector shit, but the weight + shittiness of casing construction have led to some serious edge deconstruction

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 2 September 2010 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

GOD i need an amp again.

arby's, Thursday, 2 September 2010 21:56 (fourteen years ago)

Does it have vibrato?

yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

mine's sparkly blue. and was <half the cost of the ampeg shit i was looking at which seems to shot up a few hundred in ebay prices anyway.

BAH, fried transformer! >:[

the hunt begins again.

oh lame

the great aussie ballkicking vids (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 22:45 (fourteen years ago)

actually hmmmm i have a functional g-2000 with a shitty case and u have a functional case with a brokened amp seems like this could be beneficial to both of us tbh

the great aussie ballkicking vids (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 22:48 (fourteen years ago)

well, it's still hasn't been shipped to me. they gave me the options of 1) $125 refund and ship as is (which brings it down to 300 incl. shipping); 2) their tech gets it up to speed free of charge and they transaction proceeds as planned; or 3) cancel/full refund.

so after he told me "my tech went over and determined that the power transformer for the verb/vibro circuit has a short in it. He indicated that these are no longer available and getting a reading off the current one to find a comparable replacement is not possible due to the fact it is already fried." i am thinking refund. Unless you have some wiser idea.

she's one intense bitch, she rides a unicycle (arby's), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

hmmmm yeah that seems like an odd way to deal with it - obv i have one that was functional, so you could use mine to get readings for a replacement transformer, but paying $300 for a non working amp seems uh ill advised tbh.

the great aussie ballkicking vids (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 22:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeahhhh exactly and transformers=$$$$ iirc

she's one intense bitch, she rides a unicycle (arby's), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:02 (fourteen years ago)

and like ok what else is gonna turn out to be wrong with it

she's one intense bitch, she rides a unicycle (arby's), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

oh hmmmm look what i found -> http://www.schematicheaven.com/bargainbin.htm

scroll down for linked pdf schematic

the great aussie ballkicking vids (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:05 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i was looking at that. but the transformers seem to be unlabled? (tho i am major suck at schematics)

she's one intense bitch, she rides a unicycle (arby's), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

btw COMPARE AND CONTRAST. http://www.ampwares.com/schematics/twin_reverb_ab763.pdf

she's one intense bitch, she rides a unicycle (arby's), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

i haven't actually looked at the schematic because i am at lol slow internet work, but i can't imagine that they wouldn't deal w/the transformer on there - maybe check with the dude on the other end and ask him if his tech has a hold of the schematic and if not, offer to send it to him.

xpost yeah iirc its basically a blackface twin w/ the silverface phase inverter or some such

the great aussie ballkicking vids (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

can you actually work out the numbers from just the schematic? idk i'm getting the feeling they just don't wanna replace the parts or something. anyway i already told 'em to go the refund route but i'll quick send 'em a follow up with the link.

she's one intense bitch, she rides a unicycle (arby's), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

she's one intense bitch, she rides a unicycle (arby's), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:26 (fourteen years ago)

btw if you have awesome amp things in your store this would be the time to pimp them as i just received the refund.

she's one intense bitch, she rides a unicycle (arby's), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:32 (fourteen years ago)

hrrrmmmm, i will ponder, but i dont think anything has come in since you were here - we did get in an awesome big old magnatone but it is prob going to be $$$$ if its all functional.

the great aussie ballkicking vids (jjjusten), Wednesday, 29 September 2010 23:36 (fourteen years ago)

yeah my funds top out at about $500 or so tho i'm plannin another wave of ebaying my junk so that may change in the future. magnatone stuff seems a little too collectory price-wise for me. what i liked about the earth/plush stuff is they seem just far enough below the radar that i can score a high powered head for <$500
