I figured it might be handy?

I "need":

* a $100 mic for vocals.
* a pair of small, powered monitors, because I just don't trust the little computer dinks anymore, and my Alesis are doing time in the living room.
* a microKontrol from Korg, probably.

excellent!!

I'm looking at the behringer MS20s for speakerage. are they terrible? anybody know?

Tom, is the mic going to be used solely for recording, or for live as well?

Also, I'm firmly in the camp of DO NOT WANT re: behringer. If you like the Alesis in your living room, why not just buy another pair (esp. since your ear is already accustomed to their curve, thus providing a good reference to work from)?

need SMALL, maybe the m1 520? though that's still kind of large and more power than I need. I hate the yamaha msp5s, their bass response is a punkass bitch.

For vocals, an Audio Technica mic maybe, like an AT2020?

I'd say skimp less on your monitors, even if it means waiting a bit to upgrade. I tried a few different cheapy setups, but until I got a decent set, I always had weird mix translation problems. I got a decent set of powered Yamahas eight years ago and they have been some of the best musical equipment I have gotten.
