RFI: FUCK EVERYTHING WE'RE GOING ON TOUR!

I'm leaving for my first tour next week. A really short one. I did a quick search and didn't see any tour related threads and it seems like there should be one.

The really great thing is I just recently joined this group and all the tour legwork has been done. I've gotten plenty of advice already, but more is welcome.

The only thing I'm concerned about so far is that we have no contacts in any of the cities we're hitting... so we're relying on the kindness of strangers to put us up.

tour thread begins!

Six Organs of Admittance, wow, you'll have audiences for sure! Good luck!

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

I think I'd rather lose money and stay in motels than have to ask people after the show to crash on their floor.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

I have never "toured." The closest I've come was a weekend in Wisconsin (one show in Milwaukee, one in Madison).

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

(not that you'd be losing money necessarily, just sayin')

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

We're going to be losing money as it is, unfortunately.

DR. FRANK EINSTEIN PHD (cprek), Thursday, 6 October 2005 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Pimp your merchandise to survive. Don't give away CD's, no matter how nice the guy at the club is to you, or how pretty the woman at the club is. Sell your stickers/buttons/whatever, because all that happens when you give them away is that they sit in a drawer or get stuck to the inside of someones pocket.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I lost my free C@anasta magnet. :(

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 October 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago)

Don't expect to make money. If you can afford it, have a sleeping plan in advance, whether it's friends, camping, or hotels. Make sure you like the people you're touring with, and understand that touring will make you slowly hate them, but only until the end of the tour. Also it's probably best to make sure everyone's on the same page as far as meals go, whether it's bringing the rice cooker or Taco Bell or whatever. Keep plans flexible. I don't think any of your drives are more than 8 hours, which is good. As much as possible, avoid major highways, because you know what concrete looks like.

Touring is completely great (booking a tour is not) (this is possibly less true when it's full-time) even if all the shows go badly. I am annoyed and sad and frustrated that I've done so little of it.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Best bet for sleeping, if you plan to rely on the kindness of strangers, is e-mail the bands you're going to be playing with in advance. Bands are more likely to be understanding of your need for a place to crash, and they'll be more amenable to it if you can give them warning.

Otherwise, (and I find this really hard to do in practice) try to plan cool things to do on at least a couple of days -- either wake up early to do something in the town you're already in or wake up early, leave, and get to the next town early to do something. Otherwise you'll just stay up drinking every night, wake up feeling shitty, leave late, and just get to the gig in time.

Exercise is also not a bad idea - long hours in the car plus lots of fast food equals quick deterioration in the way you feel.

Have fun! Like Casuistry, I've only toured a little and would really like to do it more.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

Whoa, you're playing an "ampitheater"?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 7 October 2005 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

It's like an amphitheater, but it goes up to 11.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 7 October 2005 01:50 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I wasn't trying to catch him on the spelling, just impressed that he's actually playing a venue large enough to be called an amphitheater.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 7 October 2005 01:56 (nineteen years ago)

i'm in the casuistry/hurting camp - i've only done one short tour. everything went kind of T.U. from the beginning, nonetheless we made it through. the people i was with were totally cool front to back and even though my end of things was all doom and gloom, i ended up having a fantastic time and a wee taste of the rock 'n roll lifestyle - (wake up - try to remember where the hell you are - panic - check the time - phew bus hasn't left town yet - get on phone - hook up with bus - get on the road - make the breakfast vote - eat - travel/read/snooze - load-in - soundcheck - meal - gig - party - sleep etc) floors do get offered on the hoof sometimes but it's best not to have to rely on them. if you can stretch to it a cheap clean motel room to yourself every so often allows you some self-determination and the privilege of being able to watch tv naked.

have a wicked time! i'm soo fucking jealous :)

john clarkson, Friday, 7 October 2005 10:54 (nineteen years ago)

We toured the UK about 4 times, and very rarely set up sleeping arrangements in advance - so long as we had somewhere we knew we could count on every few days, we'd be fine. We would always just ask from the stage if anyone minded if we crashed at their house, and would usually get more offers than we knew what to do with.

Mind you, this was a band with three (moderately) hott chicks in it.

Paranoid Spice (kate), Friday, 7 October 2005 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

(Two hott chicks and me, rather.)

Paranoid Spice (kate), Friday, 7 October 2005 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

cprek - saw the review of your band in The Wire yesterday, congrats on that too.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:06 (nineteen years ago)

Hey thanks. I haven't read it yet, but here it's good.

Good advice all around. Right now it's a scramble to get everything ready. I'm glad I had today off in order to get stuff taken care of.

The amphitheater is big outdoor greek style amphitheater. Basically a big bowl carved into the ground with a stone stage at the center. We've played there once before. It's difficult because there is no PA and absorbs all the sound which is a big problem if there are lots of folks in the band. (which is the case)

DR. FRANK EINSTEIN PHD (cprek), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

DONT SLEEP
DONT EAT

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 7 October 2005 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

No PA? So how exactly is one's voice heard?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 7 October 2005 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

Well, traditionally the bowl shape allows the voice to project, right? But with amped instruments, I don't know. You could amp the vox of course.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

"I specifically said, Spinal Tap, then Puppet Show"

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

re: sleeping arrangements --

if you only stay in hotels, they will eat up any money you actually make during the tour. your best bet is to crash at people's places. first, email anyone you might know in these cities. failing that, post to your myspace/friendster accounts about needing places to crash. ask your friends to forward this information. if you still dont get any leads, kindly ask from the stage at the end of your performance.

if someone offers, do your best to gauge whether they'd be a good person to say with. ask them if the place can accompany X [X = # number of bandmates - 1; reasoning below] number of bandmates and if they have roommates. ive heard weird stories about bands staying with people who live with their parents/grandparents/etc, so you might want to avoid that kind of situation. ask them if they have to get up early for work the next day, which might make your morning logistics easier or not, depending on the situation.

always make one bandmate sleep in the van for security reasons, even if you're staying in a nice neighborhood. rotate the responsibility during the tour. make sure they have sufficient blanketing to stay warm throughout the night. dont forget to wake them up the next morning so they can use the bathroom/eat/etc.

assign one bandmate to be responsible for getting the band up on time. this is sometimes harder than it looks because you will have been up late boozing it up the night before. do not give this task to habitual oversleeper or you will be screwed. [i always set my alarm clock to help the bands out just in case.]

be a good houseguest. i know this sounds obvious but man, have i heard some nightmare stories yet luckily never encountered any. in short: bring your own toiletries, dont leave the place a bloody mess for your host and above all, BE NICE TO THEM. unless they are mean to you and in that case, just try to get out of the place as soon as possible.

i try to be a good host to the bands that stay with me. my place isnt huge but its clean and i always try to give the bands some sort of non-fast food breakfast [usually bagels, fruit, juice and coffee]. if they feel like watching TV or browsing the internet [make sure not to save your passwords on their machines, fyi], they're more than welcome to.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 13 October 2005 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

The one guy sleeps in the van thing is a good idea, actually. I never thought of that. Though whenever possible we usually just bring any liftable gear inside (we might risk leaving a really heavy bass amp if it's a nice neighborhood). It's a lot of effort, but worth it, obviously. I guess it depends on which you hate more - carrying shit or sleeping in vans.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 14 October 2005 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

If you can't afford a hotel room, get better gigs.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

Haha Jordan, obviously you don't play in an indie rock band.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 14 October 2005 04:31 (nineteen years ago)

But anyway, even if you can, why cut into your profit margin when you can crash for free?

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 14 October 2005 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

Well, again, it depends on whether you want the tour to be profitable or enjoyable.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 October 2005 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

That said, I totally want to stay with Maria when I tour out that way.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 14 October 2005 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

I recommend jogging every morning. It will either improve your help or make for great comedy (for example, on our first morning we actually jogged right past the local Special Olympics headquarters)

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 14 October 2005 05:52 (nineteen years ago)

i knew that if i mentioned my awesome hostessing skills, people would want to stay with me. that said, im kind of picky about the bands i house. i need to have a very good gut feeling about them, cause you know, its kind of weird letting strangers into your home. right?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

yes, i second exercising. a friend of mine brought a yoga DVD on her last tour. really helped, she said.

also, laptop with wireless access is an invaluable tool.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Haha Jordan, obviously you don't play in an indie rock band.

Ha, actually I DO now, but we haven't toured (or gigged for that matter) yet, so maybe I'll be changing my tune.

I think crashing with good friends or family is cool, but something about asking people, who probably weren't planning on having a bunch of dirty musicians sleeping over, for a place to stay rubs me the wrong way. If it's a culture where this is standard after-show procedure, then I guess that's different.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know anything about touring but is sleeping in the van to protect the equipment really safe? Personally I'd rather not be in the van when somebody decides to break in and steal everything.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:50 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno man, its better than waking up the next morning to find all your equipment gone.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 14 October 2005 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ouch, Maria. Very ouch.

Gold star for robotboy! (Chris Piuma), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Chris, I didn't know you liked Guided By Voices!

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

(Actually we are one of the best bands in the world to host, unless you are really hoping for endless drinking or drugs. We will break out Boggle if you let us, though. And my bass player has slept in closets before.)

xpost: I don't!

Gold star for robotboy! (Chris Piuma), Friday, 14 October 2005 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going on my first (and possibly only) tour in two weeks. We're playing all over Europe and the UK until December. Guerrilla style -- staying with people some of the band members know on some nights, crashing in the van others. Looking forward to the drives/landscape/people though I'm also bringing a couple big books to help pass the time on the road. I'm also sure I'll never want to do it again once it's over!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 15 October 2005 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

i could be down with boggle. i have lord of the rings trivial pursuit if we get bored with that!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 15 October 2005 17:14 (nineteen years ago)

hey warmer milks yr in good company, john and ben rule but keith in particular is a golden god

i like the 'don't eat, don't sleep' advice above, but i'd like to add a few things: steal shit whenever possible (not from hosts, duh, but from stores), get some good 'return scams' going, and it is very possible, easy even, to sneak into hotels after people check out super early. My band has actually gotten hours of 'hotel sleep' by just walking in.

sleeping outside never all it's cracked up to be. seems like a great idea in the daytime, but after you've packed up the van, the very idea of settling down on the grass or a rooftop somewhere usually makes for a cranky next day

do you know what table scoring is? Do that if you're not grossed out by the idea of it. I don't do it but the rest of the band does

Siphoning gas used to be a good idea, but with gas prices what they are, it's grounds for murder now in certain places. Don't get shot over a tank of gas.

treat yourself to the occasional hotel, ice cream, and bag of cocaine. These things help even out the 'sorry there's no money,' the 'soundguy is drunk,' the 'Cat Power is playing down the block and Little Wings across the street' and my personal favorite, 'one drink ticket per member.' Like, fuck you, asshole, you know??

Have a good time. I think your 7" is killer.

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Saturday, 15 October 2005 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Roger's band is obviously way more punk than my alt-americana pansy band could ever hope to be.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 15 October 2005 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno hurting. your old bass player refused to own a bass amp! thanks kind of um, punk.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 15 October 2005 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

I think I already asked this before on another thread, but what kind of bass player doesn't want to own a bass amp? How could he refuse, on what grounds? And what did he do, play through the PA? It seems to me the last time I asked the answer was that he borrowed Other People's Amps.

k/l (Ken L), Saturday, 15 October 2005 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

I feel bad for talking shit about the guy here now since I like him. Anyway, he left the band for non-amp-related reasons.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 15 October 2005 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

Tour was awesome. The response was really positive. Ben, John and Keith were really great. It was good times every night and somehow we managed to actually make money.

Finding places to stay was not hard at all. We only ran into trouble in Cleveland, and that was a bad scene all around. And in Buffalo a beautiful French girl took us in, which was great.

We are probably going to try for another tour at the end of December so that we've got three short tours done in a six month period.

DR. FRANK EINSTEIN PHD (cprek), Monday, 17 October 2005 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

yay! glad to hear it went well. did you find any of the advice in this thread useful?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 17 October 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

I can't believe the tour is already over. Didn't this board get its name change last week?

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 17 October 2005 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

eight months pass...
Like that sandypants below me in the new answers, we are planning European tour fun. Excitement, but confusion. "How do I booked the Medicine Bar?", etc.

We plan thusly:

Reykjavik
Belfast
Dublin (horrible, likely to be crossed out)
Glasgow (people be really nice and shit)
Edinburgh
Liverpool
Manchester (feel like a shred of driftwood)
Oxford (does this count as college town lol)
Birmingham
London
Cardiff (looks like worse and worse idea, likely crossed out)
Paris
Brussels
Amsterdam
Hamburg (beat1es fans roffle how do i coiffed moptop)

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Saturday, 8 July 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

awesome - i'm still jealous!

beeble (beeble), Saturday, 8 July 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

can any london humes give me advice:

does it seem wise to play more than one night in london? there's so much going on...what a bag of worms.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 11 July 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

I need Edinburgh advice.
