In my last band, almost all of my songs were about language.
Current band, it's a little more traditional and random, but a good general theme would be aging and maturing.

our songs are generally about 1. oh girl I love you 2. oh girl you're completely nuts 3. oh the existential dread, the darkness paces round me like a wild mountain lion ready to eat 4. look dude you're off the rails.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Friday, 7 October 2005 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

I write songs about people who pretend to love each other but all the evidence points the other way. Also songs about travel and escapism and idealists who make decisions that most people would consider very bad ones based on their misguided idealism. Mostly I write songs about faulty logic.

I write songs by coming up with a scenario, often, and then trying to come up with the most ludicrous way of expressing that scenario. So if I want to write a song where someone is trying to convince another person that he has a plan for committing the perfect crime, I will have that person actually talk about making what they think is a deft play in contract bridge. But, and this is important, it can't be ludicrousness for its own sake. It has to be so ludicrous it comes back out as being sincere and real again, and it's only afterwards that you think, wait a minute...

yr mom

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 7 October 2005 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

This is a pat and Stipean response, but I mostly write songs about the sound of their lyrics. There is also a subset of songs about how I am smarter than everyone else ("Hi Momus") and a couple of in-character semi-narratives; one from the POV of a dictator's younger brother.

x-post
Pashmina, please direct me to your Tarkovsky-inspired song(s)! I would love to hear it/them.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 9 October 2005 12:56 (nineteen years ago)

I feel compelled to point out that "Hi Momus" is not a song title - although that would have been awesome - but rather a response I envisioned to the sentence before it.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 9 October 2005 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

I can't write lyrics, so I stick to instrumentals, or sometimes collaborate with someone who can write lyrics and sing. I can write prose, but the words part of my brain doesn't seem to be on speaking terms with the music part of it.

acb (acb), Sunday, 9 October 2005 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

Can you please get to work writing "Hi Momus"?

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Sunday, 9 October 2005 15:32 (nineteen years ago)
