So, #1 exciting thing so far: F3nd3r J. M4scis J4zzmaster. MIJ, should sell for about $900. Purple Sparkle w/matching headstock, gold anodized aluminum pickguard, tunematic bridge, jumbo frets.

Also interesting - Joe Strummer relic tele MIM for about the same price.

Oh yeah, satin neck on the mascis as well.

Also, for the fellow Electro Harmonix freaks out there:

Micro POG (3 knob POG) ~$210 USD
#1 Echo (3 knob digital delay w/"analog tone". hmmm..) ~$99
Germanium OD (Germanium diode overdrive unit) ~$150
Holy Grail+ (reverb decay control and "room" setting added) ~$145
Holy Stain (multi effect (???) w/verb, trem, distortion and pitch shift) ~$98
Knockout (LP to strat, Strat to Tele tone converter (yeah right, this = preset EQ in my book)) ~$67
Stereo Electric Mistress ~$120
Stereo Memory Man w/"HAZARAI" (looping, reverse echo, tap tempo, tape echo filter. I have no idea what hazarai means) ~$215

More info if/when it becomes available.

John Justen, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:06 (seventeen years ago)

I believe teh "hazarai" equates to "everything but the kitchen sink" or "assorted crap" in yiddish.

The surely-digital SMM seems like a pretty clever ploy to make us forget the DMM price bump/supply issue. I'm curious about the Germ OD, though it's sitting at an interesting price point that puts it up against a lot of the booteek stuff.

rogermexico., Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

Germanium OD (Germanium diode overdrive unit) ~$150

Hmmm, is this to compete with the boutique Rangemaster clones or something completely different?

Gorge, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:18 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure, it doesn't technically release until late July, but I've got zero info beyond the price at this point.

John Justen, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

Tiny amount of info here

John Justen, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:23 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe not then from the way that write-up looks. The Rangemaster clones tend toward one knob jobs. This looks more like a fuzztone. If it's germanium, I suppose it will be warm and woolly and capable of some screech and the pulling in of radio stations if you turn it up all the way. I have one germanium-transistorized pedal and like it. It wasn't cheap and this doesn't seem it either, although it undercuts what I paid by some.

Gorge, Thursday, 12 July 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago)

Based on the BIAS and SAG controls, i'm assuming it's in the fuzz family, though it may not be fuzz-face based as most germ fuzzes are. At least, the only pedals I can think of at the moment with voltage sag controls are fuzzes (ZVex Fuzz Factory, Durham Crazy Horse, Tone Factor UltraLord)...

I do love a Rangemaster though. So awesome and so misunderstood... "oh, but I don't WANT any more treble"... fools! Nothing better to kick an amp or an OD in the pants.

Electro-Harmonix = masters of vaporware

Nubbelverbrennung, Monday, 16 July 2007 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

Like what?

John Justen, Monday, 16 July 2007 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, in recent years I haven't seen anything vanish without a trace.

John Justen, Monday, 16 July 2007 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

Stereo electric mistress sounds like a good game.

Ed, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 09:24 (seventeen years ago)

Early word is the Micro POG still cops That Organ Sound.

I'm curious about the Peavey Windsor Studio m'self... single EL34, 1x12, built-in attenuator... $499 MSRP = maybe $329 street... hmm...

rogermexico., Saturday, 28 July 2007 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

I've had a Windsor studio on order since January (for the shop, not myself). GETTING IMPATIENT OVER HERE, HARTLEY.

Oh yeah, I ordered the Mascis, the Strummer, and that squier tele thinline in shorline gold today, so I'll report back as they arrive.

By the way, roger, I don't know if you noticed, but the coolest thing about the Windsor studio is that it's designed almost anything with the right socket as an output tube (I have the list at work, but I know KT88 was on the list. That alone should make the amp a gear-tinker geeks wet dream.)

John Justen, Saturday, 28 July 2007 03:33 (seventeen years ago)

designed to use almost anything...

That's what happens when you post on teh internet after helping someone move for several hours in 90 degree heat.

John Justen, Saturday, 28 July 2007 13:56 (seventeen years ago)

Class A power amp designed to use various octal power tubes, including EL34 (stock), 6L6GC, 6550, 6CA7, KT88, KT66, KT77, KT90, KT100 or any variation

And it looks like an official street price of $399, which is still astonishingly cheap for the spec.

rogermexico., Saturday, 28 July 2007 14:43 (seventeen years ago)

BTW, if anyone out there hasn't experienced the Fender Champion 600 through an external speaker cabinet, you really should. Shit hot awesome.

rogermexico., Monday, 30 July 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

I wonder if that's any more reliable than the old Memory Man.

libcrypt, Monday, 30 July 2007 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

Probably, but it'll also be a lot less analog, so there's a trade off.

John Justen, Monday, 30 July 2007 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

THIS JUST IN, THE UGLINESS OF YOUR GUITAR IS ONLY LIMITED BY THE SCOPE OF YOUR IMAGINATION

John Justen, Monday, 30 July 2007 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

The Mascis Jazzmaster looks nice. I believe it has a tune-o-matic bridge - is that right, John? I wonder how that affects the tremolo sound and action? What p/ups does it have - stock CIJ?

Dr.C, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

Tune-o-matic is correct, as far as I can tell. Still trying to drag pickup info out of the guitar techs @ Fender, will advise.

John Justen, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

I (hopefully) be about to purchase a 17" imac with 3gb ram - already have use of cubase and motu interface. Yay.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:46 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha that peavey custom makes me want to puke

pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

First one to get wallogina guitar can be the new mod for IMM.

John Justen, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

Vaporware not in the sense of disappearing, but in the sense of being announced as "coming soon" and then, you know, not showing up at all or showing up years later.

Nubbelverbrennung, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 19:36 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0255800550

"With its stunning and unusual Purple Sparkle polyester finish, matching headcap and gold anodized pickguard, the guitar features mods requested by Mascis himself—including an Adjusto-Matic™ bridge, reinforced tremolo arm housing and a satin-finished neck. The Dinosaur roar comes from dual vintage reissue pickups and the barrage of controls the Jazzmaster has always been known for—a three-position toggle switch with volume and tone knobs and, for this model, a two-position slide switch with volume and tone controls configured as a “lead tone circuit” (up) and a “rhythm tone circuit” (down)."

6335, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:15 (seventeen years ago)

that peavey windsor studio amp would be a great thing to use just for recording sessions, esp if you can keep a supply of different tubes around. very cool

6335, Tuesday, 31 July 2007 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

and, for this model, a two-position slide switch with volume and tone controls configured as a “lead tone circuit” (up) and a “rhythm tone circuit” (down)."

Uh? All Jazzmasters have this, except that rhythm circuit is down and 'lead' is up. So did they just reverse the switching (if so, why?), or am I totally misunderstanding?

Dr.C, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 10:23 (seventeen years ago)

That's what I was wondering too.

John Justen, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:24 (seventeen years ago)

if so, why?

More "indie"

rogermexico., Wednesday, 1 August 2007 14:33 (seventeen years ago)

actually that's a pretty good idea! i always have my jazzmaster set on lead but if i'm playing at all aggressively i usually knock it into the rhythm circuit a few times a set by accident. maybe they're tryna account for xxxtra rawking.

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 2 August 2007 04:38 (seventeen years ago)

Reversed lead/rhythm switches always make me think of the EVH Wolfgang. Which is not inherently a bad thing, as long as you ignore the involvement of EVH.

John Justen, Thursday, 2 August 2007 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

I may get banned for this, but whatevs.

YEAH! FIRST NSFW IMM THREAD!

John Justen, Sunday, 12 August 2007 07:41 (seventeen years ago)

Wasn't as exciting as I thought. Reverted.

John Justen, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

OK, so out of the EH pedals I've gotten so far that I hadn't tried before, the standouts are the #1 Echo (which sounds fantastic, very lush), the stereo clone theory (although the vibrato is...well, lets just call it odd, makes your gtr sound a bit seasick. Chorus is GR8 tho.), the LPB-1 (lots of clean boost, combined with a $39 price tag is kind of unbelieveable, but it does it.), and the Soul Preacher (Versatile but still stupidly easy to use). The only lunker to my ear so far is the Nano Clone (just sort of meh, as choruses go.) Still waiting on the Holy Stain, will report upon arrival.

Also, I will eat some crow here and say that despite my initial skepticism, the VG Stratocaster (which also just showed up. It's been a good week.) is a nearly flawlessly executed guitar. Very smart, excellent design, extremely real sounding, tuning changes on a knob are way, way cool. No artifacting on bends or trem use, harmonics work (including artificial pick squeal ones). If you haven't tried one, you really should, it took fucking about with one for a few hours, but I am convinced.

Price tag at $1700 still a major ouch, but worth it. If you have money.

John Justen, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

Wasn't as exciting as I thought. Reverted.

ARGH SURPRISE GOATSE

rogermexico., Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry. We really need a "DANGER GOATSE ENCLOSED" mod tag.

John Justen, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

Price tag at $1700 still a major ouch, but worth it. If you have money.

I'm sure they'll be MIM'ing them soon enough if there's any significant penetration for the US model.

rogermexico., Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

I thought that too, but given the $750 boost it seems to carry (it's very obviously just a modded american standard), I'm not sure that a $1150 MIM would be a great idea.

John Justen, Wednesday, 15 August 2007 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

The Classic Player series is pretty awesome, and the Strummer Tele is also testing the edge of what might be possible wrt what the market will accept... sure, plenty of people will bellyache, but if the VG turns out to be a winner plenty of people will also be happy to get their hands on one for less... and I bet they can get the bump to under $750 if they start producing in real volume.

rogermexico., Thursday, 16 August 2007 05:25 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

Mascis Jazzmaster has arrived, it is beloved by all. Looks like the USA pickups (beveled), but I haven't seen a MIJ/CIJ for a while, so I can't be sure.

The pickguard is some sort of anodized brass or copper color instead of gold, which looks shithotawesome w/the purple sparkle. A+++

John Justen, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

Whoa - USA pickups on it, I didn't know that. Is the neck any different to the std CIJ/AVRI neck?(which IMHO is the most playable neck on any guitar ever...)
