A thread for those little creative breakthroughs a.k.a. why the HELL didn't we play it slower to begin with?

We're two weeks away from recording the full album and for months we have one song that's just been frustrating and irritating to get into shape. We've just been, well, bashing the hell out of it and for me it's always been teeth-gritting time at rehearsal - crap, it's THAT SONG again and I not happy with ANYTHING that I'm coming up with.

I don't remember who suggested it at last practice, but we played it at one-third the speed. Suddenly, everything sounds fantastic and just on the brink of collapse - everyone instinctively knows what to do and now the bane of rehearsal is now one of my faves.

Post your stories of critical breakthroughs here...

I just ponied up for a pair of yamaha msp5s and have discovered that I no matter what mixing skills you think you have, you're only as good as then general tenets of epistemology and physics will allow. so I'm pushing up the bass on everything.

I loved my alesis m1mkiis for years and hey you know what it's just as well they're in the living room bringing boom and spice to my movies and video games. DO NOT PURCHASE MONITORS BASED ON HOW GOOD YR FRIEND'S ALBUMS SOUND THROUGH THEM AT THE GUITAR CENTER. hello, 24 vs 29, adulthood is brutal and somewhat expensive.

not really a creative breakthrough as much as an epiphany regarding technical details, but for me, it's huge. the first three tracks of the tombot vs ned album all need surgery now. god DAMMIT. sorry for the derail.
