I have a Dan Electro longhorn bass, reproduction, which is in near perfect condition. Although I love it, it doesn't get played and I want to sell it to put cash towards more urgent needs.
How much do you think I could get for it and where should I sell it? (FTR, I browsed ebay and only saw originals or repros being sold from Europe so had a hard time gaugeing a good price for mine)

$200-$250, according to my blue book, but I'd lean towards the $200 side of that, they're in a bit of a value slump at the moment.
― John Justen, Thursday, 9 August 2007 23:29 (seventeen years ago) link
Also, they changed the model in 2000 to the longhorn pro, which added an adjustable bridge, so if you're selling yours, mention that.
Oh, and also, the prices I listed above are for resale, so that's what you'll get in an optimum, sell directly to someone else situation. If you sell it to a store, expect 25-40% of those values. This is why no one should ever sell an instrument to one of us store owning bastards.

i am in a similar position here, although the purpose in this case is closer to 'selling your guitar and buying turntables' and not at all urgent needs. about 8 years ago i bought a gibson les paul bass off ebay for about $450-500 (idrc) and i am wanting to sell it since i really only play bass for recording purposes and i prefer playing the mako i learned to play on.
have no idea what would be a good price to offer this for considering recent ebay listings vary and i am ignorant of what would make one bass worth more than a grand or what. is there like a 'do not sell it for any less than $x' price for these thangs?

any idea what year the bass is? that will make a huge difference. also, there are a few different models - how many pickups does it have, and are the pickups labelled?

Can I steal a bit of this thread for an instrument buying question for J?
Fender Jaguar (Mexico) with meaningless chip-in-paint store-floor blemish, for about $450 -- if I happen to quite like Jaguars and will probably be buying some kind of Fenderish guitar over the next few years, is this deal as hard to pass up on as it seems today? (I imagine myself going to buy something next year, playing $999 Jaguars and thinking "yeah, now you can go pay as much for a Squier Tele as you could have paid for the rough equivalent of this guitar")
― nabisco, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:36 (fifteen years ago) link
i might be the wrong person for this because i hate the changes made on the MIM jags and jazzmasters. dear fender, we dont all want your stupid overwound pickups grrrrr.
price seems really good tho, if we're talking the classic player series street for a black one is $1050-1100, so IDK. play it first though, a bunch of my jaguar dudes seem hateful towards the feel of the thing (9.5 radius is a big part of this) and dont really think its jaguary at all. but they are also anal jaguar dudes, so make of that what you will.

oh look a new username
― anal jaguar dudes (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link
lol I was about to say anal jaguar dudes would make a great band name
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:49 (fifteen years ago) link
maybe even just anal jaguar
Anal Jaguar: It's ... Anal Jaguar, Dudes
yeah, I played it for a while and noticed slightly less awesome playability than I expected from a Jaguar, but it was still a billion times more playable than anything I've ever owned, so not a big deal -- if I were smart I'd just get it, but I doubt I'll be able to convince myself to spend any more money on guitar stuff for a while
sorry for hijack, let us return to selling questions

jjj, it is a 1993, two active humbucker pickups...not labeled afaik

probably a LPB-1 then (should have a slab body, dot inlays) in which case current blue book in Excellent (range low to high excellent) is $850-1050. if the condition is worse, estimate what % of the original finish is intact (be harsh) and use that as a modifier on the midpoint of excellent # (ie if it has 70% of the original finish/hardware in unscratched condition, the bass is worth .70(950) = $665

if the pickups are identifiable as Bartolinis or it has an arched top, we need to reevaluate tho
― AMYL NATHRAKH (jjjusten), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 23:47 (fifteen years ago) link
that sounds all about right. there's a few dings here and there around the body, nothing so severe to expose the wood.

looks like the right one to me (lol prob could have saved some time if i had thought to ask if the truss rod cover had the model on it duh)
hard to tell from the picture alone but that looks like maybe 80% condition, so in the perfect world it would be worth about $750 - of course, depending on the economy/ yer need for cash, you might have to be flexi on that.

cool, tbh i'd be cool with about $5-600 at min, i just wanted to be sure i didn't shortchange myself. ps - if there was a president of this board i wd caucus 4 u.

Re: The Jaguar $450 sounds like an amazing price for one of the Classic Player models. Is it the twin humbucker version or the twin single coils? FWIW - I played 4 of them, one was absolutely awesome (the single coil model) in the terms of feel and sound, one was OK, and two were absolutel dogs, although probably nothing that a decent set-up couldn't have cured.
Like JJ I have reservations about the MIM modifications - I don't like the screw-in trem and the tune-o-matic style bridge, but don't mind the slightly flatter radius for easier soloing up the neck. The sound of the hotter single coils was fantastic on two of the guitars I tried, but I agree - not particularly 'Jaguary'.
Still, at that price, I'd get it.
― Dr.C, Friday, 29 May 2009 12:02 (fifteen years ago) link
They were single coils -- current plan is to drop by next time I have a chance and give it a more thorough go-over for anything wrong with it. (So far as I could tell, it was just a little nick in the finish near the bolt and some sticking in one of the upper tone strips, like it was rubbing against its slot -- that and the price make me paranoid, though. My current guess is that it was a new item that got dropped or something.)
― nabisco, Friday, 29 May 2009 18:08 (fifteen years ago) link
Whoa yeah that's some price cut. Definitely be cautious checkin the neck / makin sure there are no dead frets. Etc etc, I'm sure you know what you're doin.

Haha I don't, actually -- that Jag has probably been sold, though, by this point.
On the plus side, I have discovered that there is a well-known luthier in my hood who sells a budget guitar he designed and had a bunch of made in Korea, which (weirdly) combines a bunch of stuff I was looking for -- (a) it's sort of a Tele copy, but (b) made Danelectro style with the ply body and (c) three lipstick pickups, except (d) unlike the finicky old wooden-bridge vintage Silvertones I was looking at, it obviously has workable new hardware on it.
― nabisco, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 22:29 (fifteen years ago) link
That guitar sounds super cool.
Anyone lookin for budget guitars--and someone like JJ who can probably spot good/poor builds better than I can may have a differing opinion--I got a pretty good tele thinline copy from these guys for under $200. A little disappointed they don't cary any kind of Jazz/Jag stuff but hey.

Anyone ever put a listing up on reverb.com?
― how's life, Sunday, 11 August 2013 12:50 (eleven years ago) link
I moved my listing from reverb to ebay, because I barely got any views over a few weeks. But now that it's on eBay, I feel line I'm in a little over my head, since I've never sold a guitar before. I've sold a few pedals and smaller, cheaper stiff like that.
A little background: I won this thing - a gretsch electromatic 12 string - in a sweepstakes last month. There were several prizes, and I'd hoped to win one if the other ones. I've never wanted a 12 strong in my life. Poor me right?
So I put up my listing, knock a couple hundred off the going price and hope to buy some musical equipment that I actually want with whatever proceeds. The first question I get from someone is "are you a gretsch authorized dealer?" I wouldn't think that someone would have to be an authorized dealer to sell something on ebay Am I gonna get in trouble for this? Are there some crucial step that I haven't thought out?

Did you list the guitar as new? Even though it is technically new, once you take possession of it, it should be sold as used because the buyer won't get a warranty with it, which I am sure is why they are asking.
― waterface down (jjjusten), Tuesday, 20 August 2013 22:07 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, I listed it as "new, open box", since I opened it to verify that, yes there was a guitar in there. lol. thanks, jjj.
― how's life, Tuesday, 20 August 2013 22:10 (eleven years ago) link
Best shot is to list it as used like new and then use the item description to describe the situation w/it, unplayed and idk maybe mention the contest thing.
