Anybody going to be doing NaSoAlMo this year?

snoball, Monday, 15 October 2007 22:33 (seventeen years ago) link

considering how badly i failed last year, no

electricsound, Monday, 15 October 2007 23:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Strictly speaking I failed RPM 2007 because I ran out of time, although in every other sense I consider that album a success. I suspect that this year's NaSoAlMo is going to be the same for me, as I can tell that my plan is already a bit overambitious: a concept double album based on the film version of a musical...

I'd like to, but no. Maybe instead I'll just start 10 tracks, just to brainstorm a bunch of bullshit without worrying if it's good.

Well when I said "success" I meant "I can listen to most of the album without wanting to burn all my instruments on a bonfire". I didn't mean to come across as smug or put anyone off of doing NaSoAlMo. It's a competition only in as far as if you record some songs during November, you've won.

I was thinking nah because my real band will probably be recording through most of November but then I realized hey we'll have all the stuff set up to record and we're only going to be recording like one day a week so maybe I can sneak in some days in midweek and get this done.

I found last time that having a space where you can leave all your gear permanently set up was one of the keys to getting the songs done in a month. Unfortunately I didn't have such a space, so I spent a lot of time setting up/tearing down equipment, which along with local noise restrictions really cut into the amount of recording I got done.

I should do this, get back in the game.

for real, and i have like 4 or 5 songs i have been picking and humming around with for months now, i think i may put lyrics on them about hurricanes blowing faces off

haha

just for a larf i might try and finish one of the songs i started last year before the end of the month

electricsound, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 23:50 (seventeen years ago) link

ok, this time I might actually have a recording set-up by mid-month.

4 bare bones tracks done. Find myself fishing for hooks in Tescos. Need new strings.

Lynskey, Friday, 2 November 2007 22:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Vague idea what I'm going to be doing for nearly all the tracks. Music and lyrics written for two tracks. Now if only I didn't have a sore throat...

snoball, Friday, 2 November 2007 22:21 (seventeen years ago) link

so psyched, got started on a handful of tracks. most of them are under 2 minutes, which is how i think im gonna have to go about doing this for the bulk of the project. lots of snippets a la wire's pink flag.

m bison, Monday, 5 November 2007 01:06 (seventeen years ago) link

who here is doing a cover? are you trying to stay faithful to the original or going in a way difft directions?

m bison, Thursday, 8 November 2007 05:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, it's going to be a cover of PSB's "Yesterday When I Was Mad". I'm planning on it being fairly similar to the third version on "Disco 2", because to fit in with the album the track needs to start fast and then slow down. However it will probably sound totally different as a) I don't have loads of synths and b) I can't even sing as much as Neil Tennant, unless I decide to shout the words.

do interpolations count as covers?

m bison, Saturday, 10 November 2007 07:47 (seventeen years ago) link

i just finished a folk cover of kraftwerk's "neon lights" that makes me wish i knew how to play fiddle or steel guitar

progress reports anyone? i have finished recording and now need to work on making the levels from each song sorta uniform

its called 'adequacy and accountability'

Report? Well mine's a bit of a disaster, having got nowhere near as much done as I had planned by this point. Main reasons being a) not enough time to write, and b) not enough time to record when the house and surrounding area is quiet. But I have most of tomorrow to catch up.

one year passes...

listening to this for the first time in forever, some of it is pretty good, but i have forgotten how to tune+play almost all of the guitar parts :/

^^^ I'm really bad at that! I should make more through notes about what I'm playing when I'm working on a track, but I always think "aaahhh, that line's simple, I'll remember it..." - and then promptly forget.

a concept double album based on the film version of a musical...

I didn't get it even half finished during NaSoAlMo 2007, then the project sat around for another year while I worked on other projects, before I finally finished it off for NaSoAlMo 2008, and even then over-ran by another week...
