We deal with a fair amount of loop guys, and they all seem to be buying these http://www.digitech.com/products/JamMan/JamMan.htm

Esp. cool if you want to tweak loops in your computer and then reimport them for later use.

Thanks--these are all great! Wow--so many to choose from! I like the Boomerang site a lot, but the JamMan looks familiar, as does the Giga and the Electro Harmonix. Time to go shopping--Manhattan watchout!

Not a pedal:

I just sold my Headrush E2 to get an EHX Memory Man Hazarai.

My friend speaks glowingly of the Boss DD-20 (is this the same as "the Giga"?), but it costs £150, so I haven't been able to justify it to myself yet. Plus I feel sure that I should be able to throw something similar to the more workmanlike aspects together in software if only I could manage to sit down and think about what I'd need from it.

Most people I've seen doing this stuff live (where i've been close enough to stare at pedals) have had either a Headrush or a JamMan.

Let us know what you get and what you think; I'd be interested.

I've only ever used the Headrush and Loopstation.
Headrush : advantages
- easy to use

Headrush : disadvantages
- only 12 seconds sample time (24 secs if you don't want to layer the loop)
- no input level
- anything other than a guitar or bass distorts like crazy when you try looping
- output level doesn't go any higher than the internal (set) input level

Boss Loopstation : advantages
- 16 minutes memory
- you can save 10 loops
- input level + strong output level

Boss Loopstation : disadvantages
- uses those generic Boss rubber pedals, which aren't very good for accuracy when looping (or maybe that's just me)
- seems to be some kind of weird delay before the loop starts? I need to investigate this further.

So, the Boss is definitely better but remember they have 3 different models (crap small one, medium size one with 2 pedals, fuck off big one which is basically 3 Loopstations in the same unit).

Pressure! I think I'm going to go with the Jamman, as that is available down the Guitar Center, and my fav store, Rivington, has nada. If the local stores have the Boss DD, I'll try that, AND the Boomerang--and will def let y'all know. Thanks so much! I think the Jamman can add flash cards to increase memory, which is GREAT--hopefully Boss Loopstation can too.

And yeah, they're all expensive--but, deep breath, gotta take the plunge to play live sometime!

My band went to watch a bunch of great bands on Wednesday play at the Knitting Factory, and seeing Yacht, Tussle, and a bunch of others. We're totally inspired!

S, how do you like the Memory Man w/Hazarai? I haven't gotten one in yet, so it is still a mystery to me.

John Justen, Friday, 7 December 2007 19:35 (seventeen years ago) link

BTW, re:flash cards, I have a used Boss DD-20 (which is the same as the Gigadelay) in the store, and it doesn't have any removable memory option, so unless they added it later, no luck there.

Update--I tried the Boss RC20, the Jamman, and the Headrush. The sound on the RC20 was the best, and I really liked the reverse effect, the Headrush was a little weird, and the Jamman had the easiest controls by far.

It was really easy for me to figure out the Jamman, whereas I had some trouble getting the RC20 to work perfectly--also, as JJ said, there's no expandable memory. So in the end, I went home with Jamman.

Now to figure out how to get it to record in time! YAY! Will update when I get time to plug it in!

I'm sad that there wasn't the Boomerang to try, but alas, they are the Guitar Center.

Haven't got it yet, waiting for shipping from the States (which is far far cheaper, but post takes time), so I will report back once it arrives.

At the moment I'm using spliced cassette loops and a three head tape machine, will be nice to get back to some sort of technology.

one month passes...

what was the answer re: Memory Man?

The looping function is quite good. v. clean sounding, nice controls for overdub attenuation, rudimentary HPF/LPF, speed changes and tap tempo. Streets ahead of the Headrush for looping. Only sucky thing is a very short loss of sound at the beginning, making it useless for looping one continuous sound. Doesn't save loops and only 30 seconds of time (though I think overdubbing is pretty much unlimited). Also I have having to hold the button down to loop stuff.

Haven't fiddled with the echo/delay functions as much, but it's all pretty much what you'd expect, nothing special, nothing bad. The mono -> stereo ping pong echo does sound pretty cheesy, but that's par for the course really. If you're going to use it for echo/delay, then the Headrush is far better.

All up though, it's only $214 US new(with free international postage!) if you hunt around on eBay, and I don't think there are any other loopers with stereo in/out. It's a lot smaller than I was expecting, don't know why this irks me slightly.

I would still like to give the Digitech Jamman a trial.
