C/D: Parents at gigs

My parents are the overeager type. I know I don't play DC that often, but it's really not necessary (or desirable) they come every time. Course I can't not tell them when we're staying with them. I try to hint by saying stuff like "You won't really like this place - it's not comfortable," but they don't seem to take a hint, and I don't want to flat insult them when they're putting the band up.

If it's a jazz club type gig or some big festival, I don't mind. If it's a bar where I want to get drunk and talk to girls after the show, I try to explain that it would be better for everyone if they didn't go.

(my mom came to a particularly over the top show like 5 years ago and is still convinced that my band just guzzles shots and says nasty rhymes about women onstage all the time)

(even though she's seen us a number of times since then at family-friendly venues)

my parents haven't seen me play music live since my first band played a high school talent show when i was 14. they shut off the power while we were playing and i kicked over some chairs. which may be why they haven't seen me play live since then (well also i haven't played shows anywhere near where they have lived since then). i am perfectly ok with this, i don't think they would have much fun at our shows

sarah's mom has come to a few shows, she's a good sport

Mom on phone just now: "Do you know what time you're going on?"
Me: LATE, I'm sure it will be very LATE
Mom: And is there a cover charge?
Me: YES there is DEFINITELY A COVER CHARGE
Mom: Ok, because your BROTHER wants to come and bring some friends.

ouch

note: my parents didn't shut off the power, whoever was running the talent show did

Someone I know played a gig with his prog band at some crappy rock dive back in the 80's sometime, and his insane, posh parents turned up in full evening dress.

No, I was glad my brother was coming. That came out wrong.
