oops. here's a better link anyway: http://www.pas.org/resources/rudiments/rudiments2.html

Jordan, Thursday, 23 October 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link

for me it's a toss-up between the good ol' paradiddle (i feel like i've really been getting in touch with my paradiddle lately), Swiss triplets, and the paradiddle-diddle.

on jazz stuff i'm paradiddle-diddlin' all the time, but the sticking i use half the time (RLLRRL RLLRRL) apparently isn't officially rudimental.

I think I'm gonna vote for one of those ratamacues, which I first heard about on this thread

Retrato Em Redd E Blecch (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 23 October 2008 19:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Of these, I voted for the single paradiddle because it is the only one I have ever found useful in the making of actual music. And that only sometimes. At tempos between about 90 and 130 it can make for a funky fill. Otherwise, repeat these rudiments: The shot-and-a-beer, the sex-with-a-woman, and the not-playing-badly.

Whoa, I've never heard of some of those. Are they in that advanced, super-secret Stick Control II book that you can only purchase through time travel?

No flamadiddle, no legitimacy.

flam paradiddle = flamadiddle

my favorite hot-sounding fill of the last couple weeks is like this, where the accented (capitalized) notes are played on a cymbal + kick drum:

RlrrlRllRlrrlRll

flam paradiddle = flamadiddle

OK, what about the flamadiddlediddle then?

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link

OK, that's covered too. There's a host of triple-diddles you didn't mention, then.

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I am bound and determined to delegitimize this poll.

post-apocalyptic time jazz (Masonic Boom), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Only if you want to be in marching band.

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Screw traditional grip btw.

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago) link

i love traditional grip!

Jordan, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link

traditional grip hurts my hand

Mr. Que, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link

(lol, maybe i'm doing it wrong.)

Mr. Que, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Traditional grip is great when you are marching with a snare on a sling, but otherwise, there's no reason to use it.

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

when it comes to end of this list and all the flammed mills and stuff, i kinda adopt that "eh it's okay that i don't practice that stuff, i'm not a drum corps nerd" attitude. but i would totally disagree on the usefulness of practicing rudiments in general, it's way applicable.

Jordan, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

What's the name of that painting of the 3 USA dudes with snare, fife, and something else?

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

isn't traditional grip a good way to hit the drums "lighter"???

Mr. Que, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Whoa talk about starting a religious war now.

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:24 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i like traditional grip because the stick rests in your hand more easily, and that + the angle makes it easier to play lighter. it just feels better for playing jazz.

besides, it looks cool, and that's really what it's all about.

Jordan, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean you can play loud with it too, but i still play matched if i'm playing a lot of backbeats/rimshots.

where's hurting to back me up here?

Jordan, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:35 (sixteen years ago) link

If you play trad grip, I hope you also tilt yr snare down to the right (if you are right-handed), as this was how trad grip is designed to be played.

^^^ can't play a drum in a sling w/matched grip.

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago) link

no, i tilt it away from me a little bit (whether i'm playing matched or trad). this comes from playing brass band snare drum where it's strapped on but not at an angle:

Jordan, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

anyway that's silly, it's super easy to play trad grip on flat surfaces

Jordan, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

(btw thank you for arguing about drum nerd shit on ilx)

Jordan, Monday, 27 October 2008 18:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I stopped using trad grip after about 6 years of drumming, 'cause I just got a ton more control with matched.

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Except for the first few years of HS marching band, when all the snare drummers had to use slings.

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago) link

The hardest part about the sling wasn't trad grip, but the fact that the goddamned drum moves all over the place!

№ 1 (libcrypt), Monday, 27 October 2008 18:54 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, i would never use a sling that puts the drum at a sideways angle, but the other kind just takes some getting used to.

i don't understand the dudes who have their snare at a really pronounced angle towards them, that seems really uncomfortable (unless it's super high up, maybe).

Jordan, Monday, 27 October 2008 20:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I never learned trad grip fwiw, but the jazz drummers that I like pretty much all use it.

Retrato Em Redd E Blecch (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 31 October 2008 15:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I voted seven stroke roll. In general I think double-stroke rolls are the awesomest rudiment, especially when used in weird, rhythmically offset ways.
