i'm kinda jealous of dudes who use french grip for everything. it looks cool and efficient, and i use it for jazz ride and a few other types of things, but for me it just doesn't work for normal accented 8th & 16th note patterns.

However the damn drumsticks that someone else was stupid enough to leave lying around end up in my hands (usually before they are pried out.)

So much to learn, so much to learn. I will never understand this drumming thing. :-(

What non-session rock drummers use traditional grip?

Stewart Copeland
Brian Chase of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Also, Dave Lombardo uses matched grip, so anyone who doesn't vote matched grip is a wuss.

Oh and I have read that Mr. Levon Helm, long a traditional-grip holdout, has now gone to matched.

I forget where I saw that but the writer said it has made his fills less busy--and I'm all like wha? because I never thought Helm's playing was especially busy. Go figger.

Wait, is french the one where you cradle the stick in your knuckle and german the one where you're basically overhand gripping? I mostly play the former, whichever that is.

yeah, pretty much. i wish i was better at french...i use it for jazz ride stuff of course, but it just doesn't work as well for accented 8th/16th note things, for me.
