ok got myself a clarinet - always wanted one - it works just fine.
having trouble discerning the difference between happily tootling away and the SQUEAK / squawk - don't feel any difference in my lips.
bottom lip is rolled over bottom teeth - slight grip of lips on mouthpiece / reed (moistened) - clarinet @ 45 degrees,
top of reed mouth piece held in mouth at the end of boottm lip rolled in over bottom teeth.
reed fastened to mouthpiece 1mm to 1/2 a mm short of the edge of the mouthpiece.
can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong?
thanks

Embouchure :-)
Where are you blowing from? It may not be an embouchure problem - it shouldn't feel like you're blowing from your throat, but from your abdomen, your diaphragm. Also, try widening your lips - like smiling - this should tighten up your embouchure without introducing any tension into the equation!

five years pass...

My friend has lent me his clarinet to try out. He bought it secondhand on a whim and found it too hard to play. I was quite surprised I was able to take to it fairly easily but I'm concerned about hygiene really. It doesn't seem very clean to use a reed someone else has used. What's the right way to clean or preferably disinfect a clarinet?
