IMM GarageBand Internet Service Collaboration

I think it'd be fun to collaborate with IMMers on a song or two, a la Postal Service. I could host the files and a bunch of us could take turns adding or changing tracks. GarageBand seems the best bet to me: I realize this rules out PC users, but GB comes with a Mac and I think there are a lot of Mac users here. Anyone into it?

You don't really need to be software-specific, though -- people can just import takes/files into whatever they happen to use.

nabisco, Saturday, 19 April 2008 20:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I was thinking that some folks might use filters & virtual instruments. No need to bounce these unless they're not packaged w/GB. Also, punch-ins will needlessly inflate size if bounced front-to-back, and automation and filter settings will be totally lost.

I might be speaking into an echo chamber here, tho.

libcrypt, Sunday, 20 April 2008 04:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll play.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 20 April 2008 06:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm in

Elvis Telecom, Monday, 21 April 2008 20:59 (sixteen years ago) link

i will do this, but i have to get a track to tombot first or he will crush me

John Justen, Monday, 21 April 2008 21:01 (sixteen years ago) link

In a couple days, I'll set up an FTP account that everyone can share. Once we get started, don't feel shy about doing 2 drum tracks or embellishing someone else's organ (not a euphemism, I swear) or whatever. All will shake out in the mix.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 00:00 (sixteen years ago) link

Mine's version 3.0.4 btw. Are there going to be any issues with people not having the latest, or will we just cross that bridge when we come to it?

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 00:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess we'll just deal with it (using 4.1.2 here)

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 01:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I have set up a WebDAV area where we can share files. Instead of posting the info here where it's relatively public, I'm just going to mail it to everyone who expressed interest's ILX mail. If I left anyone out, let me know. If you have any questions about how to upload with webdav, you can AIM me as libcrypt or Gtalk me as libcrypt(@gmail.com).

libcrypt, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 20:17 (sixteen years ago) link

skip the apache bullshit and straight to "Connecting to a WebDAV server"

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 23:06 (sixteen years ago) link

see if mine works

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago) link

OK so since LC has informed me that GB4 can read but not write GB3-compatible files I think I'm just going to build some loops with GB3 and if anybody wants to use them as starting points or filler or whatever we'll leave it at that until I finally get leopard & ilife 4

El Tomboto, Thursday, 24 April 2008 01:52 (sixteen years ago) link

awww man i wana be in on this but i have no set up right now :( :( :(

Cool deal. I grabbed the one you uploaded and have started mucking around with it... Will spend some more time with this next week.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 24 April 2008 23:02 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Uploaded a couple of GBs: Riff on ET2 and one of my own. Pretty much EM/groove direction so far, but it really doesn't have to be that way, I mean, if anyone comes to the table w/more of a song-structured thing, then I personally can definitely work with that. How you guys doin?

Chaks, what do you need to get set up w/us?

libcrypt, Monday, 12 May 2008 04:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Would it be bad to buy a Mac solely to do this?

HI DERE, Monday, 12 May 2008 18:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, probably. I mean, I doubt we're gonna be breaking amazing new musical ground here or anything: This is just a fun thing. On the other hand, if you were already in the market for a new computer, then y'r not gonna regret getting a Mac, I don't think.

Couple more beats up. Where you guys at?

libcrypt, Tuesday, 27 May 2008 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Got sidetracked - we're recording much sooner than I was expecting so I'm working on that at the moment.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 18:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Damn, I really need to buy one of them fangled keyboard controllers or some such.

Nhex, Friday, 30 May 2008 06:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Tombot now has no excuse not to be posting more here now that he has latest GB NOR DO THE REST OF YOU HAVE ANY EXCUSE and by the way if anyone else wants in just give me a ding-a-ling.

You people are lazy slackers.

I know.

El Tomboto, Thursday, 26 June 2008 00:34 (sixteen years ago) link

oh maybe i should do this

n/a, Thursday, 26 June 2008 21:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Hey for us non-garagebanders, hows about a simple 3 track collaboration:
(right channel, left channel, center channel) mix down to stereo mp3?

just as soon as i find my fucking install cd for my sound card

m bison, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 01:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Good thing. I will send you the login infoz when I'm on my big mac.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 03:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm game for this if anyone's still interested.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 04:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Mail sent to Hurting 2, m bison, and n/a. Let me know if you don't get the credentials in a timely fashion.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 04:37 (sixteen years ago) link

I tried emailing you about this, I don't know if you didn't get it or If I'm not allowed in.

I know, right?, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 10:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Ayo so what do I like do? Just grab any of those tracks and mess with it?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Also can I post my own stuff?

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:54 (sixteen years ago) link

Hurting 2: Yes, basically no rules here other than try to make something interesting. I mean, everything is up for grabs. If you want to redo someone else's track, then fine. If you want to want to lay down an acoustic folk song, then that's fine too. Whatever moves ya.

I Know, Right?: Send you auth infos. If you have any issues, mail me: libcrypt at gmail dot com. Not sure why I didn't get yr prev mail. I suppose it could have gone in the spam bin, which I don't check.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 15:03 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess one rule is that if you upload some stuff, it might be useful to post about it here so's people know you did something.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 15:05 (sixteen years ago) link

If you want to get all John Oswald on a track, that's OK as well. As long as you don't erase someone else's track on the server, all is good.

libcrypt, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 15:11 (sixteen years ago) link

must have, your one you sent me was in the spam folder. Thanks!

I know, right?, Tuesday, 15 July 2008 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

this is going to sound like a dumb question, but i havent used garageband in about three years and i used it briefly then, so...is there anyway to manually compose midi tracks or does everything have to be a "live" recording?

m bison, Friday, 18 July 2008 02:42 (sixteen years ago) link

You can manually edit software instrument (not quite MIDI, but close enough) tracks. I can't remember if there's a pencil tool, but obviously if you can get one note in, then you can option-drag it to make as many notes as you like, adjusting for velocity, duration, etc., afterward.

libcrypt, Friday, 18 July 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link

If you want to make and use loops, you can download a shareware program called Cacophony, make the loop file there and then just literally drag the file itself onto an empty track.

OK guys.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 06:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Sounds a bit like ninjam, though I've never used it successfully.
