The Madness

I think one of the main reasons I realized I couldn't stay in music school was that I seemed to experience a feeling of madness from spending more than a couple of hours a day dealing with music. Three hours in a practice studio plus ear-training, theory, ensembles, checking out records, etc. and not much normal social interaction with non-musicians or contact with the mundane stuff of daily life. I guess that much time spent on any one thing could make one crazy, but I sometimes felt like it was the music itself, messing with the brains and whatnot. Anyone else?

I often wonder if professional chefs start to feel that way about food. I can relate somewhat. I teach guitar now and it can be a bummer to play guitar and talk about it all day but not actually be making any worthwhile music, and then come home and not want to pick up the guitar again.

This is one reason I have pretty much quit recording my friend's bands. If things get too dragged out, I tend to get a little too honest.

I never got enough of performing with others, but I hated practicing by myself. So boring! So I guess it's the social interaction of music that I like(d), so to speak.
