sarah and our drummer seem content to sit around and talk or just wait, but i have trouble sitting still before shows so i'll maybe go for a walk. i might do a crossword if there's one available, or read whatever magazines or newspapers are laying around. i never ever remember to bring a book.

Perhaps too obvious, but that is beering time.

I really dislike having more than a couple of hours of such waiting. I like to have enough time to eat a meal, have a beer and say hi to anyone I know. More time than that and I start to go stir crazy. Pool can be a good option if there's a table. I've tried reading but I usually can't focus and always feel a bit putzy reading in a club or bar. Sometimes I do my drum warm up patterns, but only if there's a closed off space where the patrons can't see me.

oh yeah pool is good. i generally don't start drinking until right before we're supposed to play, i don't like to be super drunk while performing

n/a, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 12:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm actually really uptight about my show drinking - exactly one drink before we play (preferably consumed less than an hour before start) and one with me on stage, barring unusual circumstances.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I'll watch a sport if there's one on, otherwise just mill around and chat with people. Try not to have more than one drink as Hurting suggests.

We light joss sticks and incense. Then we have a seance so that the spirits of Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and GG Alain come down upon us. After that we all have a group hug and sprinkle the stage with a mixture of Holy water, taramasalata, hummus, and diabetic urine. Then right at the beginning of the set, we let loose rabid lemmings upon the audience.

Yeah, this is ideal, but sometimes I'll go over that depending on the spirit of the evening and if the venue has good beer. The Casbah in San Diego had awesome beer and gave four drink tickets per band member. That was a recipe for ridiculousness.

I like to take photgraphs, like this one of our singer Darren, or of the other bands sounchecking or anything to try and combat the general itchiness.

Or frantically message people on couchsurfing.com because neither of the people at the club look like they want to put you up for the night and fuck sleeping in the van again.

eat the cured meats and cheese on the rider as I won't generally have eaten during the day as that would involve spending money... and thus spoil my appetite so that when it comes time to have my meal post-soundcheck I don't actually want it. I AM A GENIUS.

"Left." Fuck you, J0hn :)

Depends on the show, but sometimes I wind up drinking a pretty decent amount before we play. Unlike with driving I tend to perform better if I'm a step past buzzed. I try not to overdo it, but I'm not a heavy drinker so occasionally I let it go too far. We're loud, so no big deal if I F up a little (which happens more severely if I'm stone sober--nerves).

My dream is to have a band lineup that will free me from having to play an instrument, that way I can be really drunk onstage and just sing and it will be awesome. Singing and playing at the same time requires too much coordination/work.

St3ve Go1db3rg, Friday, 15 August 2008 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Luckily I only have to play guitar, no backup vocals even. I pretty much CAN'T play and sing simultaneously. Well I can, but the words have to line up with my guitar strumming so rigidly, and forget about leads.

RabiesAngentleman, Friday, 15 August 2008 18:32 (sixteen years ago) link

The one advantage that all-girl bands have in this regard is that this time is MAKE-UP AND HAIR TIME.

It automatically gives you something to do, something to fuss over and worry about and talk about which doesn't hurt your performance in the way that sitting around all afternoon drinking too much certainly will.

(Also the only time in my life I ever actually put on makeup. It's kind of like painting.)
