cracking/disintegrating speaker

over the past few months, part of the speaker in my guitar amp has been gradually cracking and flaking off. it is what this diagram calls the "dust cap," or the shiny silvery part in the center of the speaker:

as far as i can tell, it's not affecting the sound of the amp but i am not a discerning listener. is this something i should be concerned about? should i have the speaker replaced?

you should have the dust cap replaced, which can be done, or have the speaker reconed (which is sort of an overkill solution, but might be easier for the tech/safer in the long run). The dust cap keeps particulate (like, say, little bits of itself that are flaking off) out of the voice coil.

oh yeah, when you have it reconed, tell the person who does it to clean the voice coil gap in order to remove any crap that might have gotten in there already.
