You can totally do it, easiest way is with a dremel routing setup (at least that's the way I learned it). Buy two fretboards, or at least do a test run on a scrap piece of the same wood, as it's pretty much guaranteeed you will fuck up the first one you do.

not yet. i bought a new bass that already has awesome inlays. i am wanting to get a shitty bass neck to practice inlays on, then a nice bass to do it for real with.

Ah, if I had known I could have snagged an old detached fretboard for ya the other day. All you really need is some scrap wood though, right?

just some pearl blocks like a les custom. tho i flipped the first block 90 cuz i don't like it that way, ummm that'll probably look weird to some ppl but whatev. i wasn't tackling anything more elaborate for my first go, without practice runs, ~on~ my guitar...

oh here's a pretty good inlay tutorial btw for anyone thinking of doing this
http://frets.com/FRETSPages/Luthier/Technique/Inlay/BasicRepro/inlay.html
not sure what his "old favorite fingerboard sanding block" is in that exactly, but it looks like he's got sandpaper on the bottom of a jack plane??. i'm flushing them cautiously with a bastard file and some other various files to avoid hitting the fingerboard and fucking my radius (bad radius=frets don't seat)
