so who has thoughts on RF interference and static discharge?

There was this thread: Hum through my moniters and how to stop it. on ILM, and I figured it wouldn't hurt to be brought up here.

I've had massive problems with RF interference in my new apartment, and I've also had expensive and damaging problems with static discharge (sparks flying a couple times... knocking out a tv, an audio interface, the firewire ports on my computer). I know about ferrite cores and grounding things together, but I've still come accross large amounts of current running through me when I touch the wrong two things, and I can't seem to affect the RF interference enough.

Anyone here ever dealt with this?

yeah, this sucks. Get a line tester from a hardware store and check all the sockets in your house. Chances are wires might be crossed somewhere. Only use the sockets that check out ok. If possible have everything running through a power strip connected to one socket (watch the wattage). Though it's "not recommended" using a ground lift on the power strip should kill ground hum (aka pull out the 3rd prong)

Is the interface beyond repair? That's tough.

the interference might be beyond repair for certain things at least... for instance I get a ton of it when monitoring my polysix... and I don't know what would be involved in eliminating that (since it seems that it's something inside the synth that picks it up, not wires running out of it).

If I can't figure out anything that works in six months (when the lease expires), then I'll probably just be moving on.

oh... is the *interface* beyond repair...
I think it might be, but it seems to be covered by warranty... I mailed it off to the factory with an RA# the other day.

If you can feel "large amounts of current" running through you when you touch the wrong 2 things, then there is likely a dangerous electrical fault somewhere in your apartment. Hassle the landlord to get it fixed, or move on.

well, from the other thread
(ps... I do have *everything* in my apartment plugged into the same source right now... I've also got many of the electronics grounded to one another, though when I get time I'll do some more of that...

lol

ps. forgot to mention... two outlets show a hot/neutral reverse. I haven't been using those outlets (this is the reason for using the single remaining outlet in my living room for all electronics right now).

will get back to this after shooting a movie starting today!
