holy smokes. i finally fucking found it.

let me break this down to you: ever since Deck II for OS9 became a non-possibility i have DESPAIRED at ever finding a sound editor that would just let me do basic, nice, fast, multitrack editing. protools is beyond my means.

it's called REAPER. for what i do it is almost perfect. and this is what is truly amazing - on my ancient Powerbook G4 it fucking SCREAMS. it is the most responsive, fastest, most rock-solid feeling app i use - more than safari, more than mail, more than photoshop. wayyy more. it is like butter.

anyway, it doesn't seem to have a very high profile. and for what you do, it may not fit the bill. but for those of you who are fed up with Peak, this is fucking IT!

does it do midi stuff + audio recording like logic, or is it just an editor?

goole yes it does do that stuff although i have 0 experience with how that part works.

i mean goddamn. beyond the niceness of all the editing facilities it renders a 30-minute, three-track edit with like 20 different file sources in like what... a minute and a half? on my Powerbook G4????

have you tried ninjam (from the same people)?
it's a hoot!

Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:48 (fourteen years ago) link

ninjam looks wild. are these people from the future???

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 22:55 (fourteen years ago) link

They are on time delay to get around the latency from sending audio around the internet, so in a way it is actually YOU who is from the future with ninjam.

haha

oh and did i mention that Reaper has Protools-like realtime scrubbing that works..... on my Powerbook G4??

Crazy what the dudes who created Winamp could come up with, eh?

Actually have Pro Tools, but can't record into it, will investigate.

Can Reaper interface with Kontakt?

I liked Reaper and Ninjam, but being a total amateur had trouble getting everything working and set up, especially midi.

Is there a relevant thread for producing music on a mac or can I quickly hijack this one? Wondering if anyone could recommend any cheap / free software that will allow me to record audio off DVDs / internet radio / youtube in order to import them into Propellorheads Record and use them as samples?

audacity, if it works on your mac (doesn't on mine), soundflower if you want to record what's coming out of your own mac.

It's weird, because i'm pretty sure Audacity could do that on the Windows version. Couldn't get it to record playing audio (as described above) on Mac, though.

Soundflower looks interesting, I'll give that a go. Thanks!

sounds cool and was reading about it. Just occured to me that if it doesn't work out, did you look into Mackie's Tracktion?

Oh Reaper is great yeah R does all his stuff with it, hes' been using it for years! You can load VSTs into it and everything. Its a simple multitracker but its also useble as a full elecrtonic production tool. Its really easy to use.

Didnt know they had it for the Mac to be honest!

I'm also going to jump in with a recommendation for REAPER. I use the PC version, so I don't know how good it is on Macs, but on my old WinXP 1.8GHz it runs really well. I actually switched to REAPER about two years ago after getting fed up with Audacity's flakiness and lack of power.

might seem normal (snoball), Saturday, 20 February 2010 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

dan i've been using tracktion for about 5 years. i even bought it! it's great - i looove the built in filters - but has always felt a little awkward to me, and the interface has always felt a little slow on my Powerbook. afaik Reaper doesn't offer quite the same amount of post-processing sophistication but the real basic editing functions i need just feel so freaking snappy, and it all feels just very well thought out for what i need to do i.e. split, move and join up hundreds of little bits of audio, easy/fast customizing of the cross-fades on each split, etc.
