Help kkvgz try to dispose of an amp

Hi all. When I moved into my new house, the previous owners left behind a Sears Silvertone organ amp. I had thought about holding onto it and tinkering around with it as some kind of project, but with the baby on the way, I'm just not gonna have that kind of time.

So my question is, if I put an ad on craigslist or something, is anybody even gonna want this or am I just better off giving it to a thrift store or something? My wife's been threatening to throw it out, but I'd at least like to give it to some geek who could fix it up or strip it for parts or something. Any thoughts?

whoa dont be hasty on this one, i assume its a tube amp? see if you can find a model number on it somewhere and i can let you know what its worth. probably at least $300 no matter what if its functional.

Hey jjjusten! Good looking out. If it turns out to have monetary value, that would be great, but like I said, I'm mostly interested in matching an amp with a musician and getting it out of my wife's evil clutches. She goes on a serious "throwing stuff away" kicks, sometimes.

I don't know how well it works, so I guess I'll have to find something to plug into it. It does turn on when plugged in though.

As best as I can tell, the serial number inside the amp is either:

I.57.47070
or
1.57.47070

Here's a couple pictures:

Note, the red handle isn't some kind of style thing - someone just dripped paint on it : )

ok thats some version of the silvertone 4707 - but the ones i've seen are "console" versions (means they have legs that raise them off the floor) and a wood cabinet.

huh. is that a 12" speaker btw? also, am i right in thinking that the only inputs are a pair of rcas on the back? if so its def going to take a slightly more adventurous guitar dude for a final destination, because i think the preamp might need to be modded/rebuilt.

It does look like the cabinet used to have legs on it. There are actually three 1/4" jacks on the top of the cabinet, only one of which looks like it's wired to anything. It has a 12" speaker. Thank you so much for putting thought into this, jjj.

I think it has a 12" speaker. I haven't actually measured it, but that seems about right.

ok in excellent condition (which it isnt, but its the best place to start with these sorts of things) the vintage blue book puts it at $350-$425. I think its probably an early sixties model judging from the tolex covering. If I had it in the store I'd probably price it at $275 and expect it to sell somewhere between that and $225 (again assuming that it works). The vibrato in that thing is probably really really cool, and brings out my inner geek. Awesome find dude!

btw are the 3 1/4" jacks labeled at all? if theres a guitar ready input (prob labeled "instrument") it might push back up to the $300 point

bitchin find! i was looking at one of these and a few like it a while back. wish i could help take it off your hands but alas my bank account is functionally $0 at the moment.

Yo jjjusten, when I threw those numbers back at Mrs. Kongvsgodzilla, she reconsidered. : ) Thank you so much.

I got my old guitar from my mom's house and tested it out. It sounds pretty sweet actually! The only problems that I noticed are that the 1/4" jack is a little loose and the vibrato doesn't work. The jack should just take some solder maybe? I don't know about the vibrato. I have two months to tinker with it alongside a crap-ton of other home improvement projects. Good times!

vibrato is def going to be tube-drive, so its possible that its just a tube problem. ill see if i can find some schematics or at least a tube rundown

zowee. this seems like a nice time to come across something like that, too -- I feel like every other little indie band I see is obsessed with old Silvertone and Danelectro gear, you know? (J's pricing book should have a separate markup column for "is the item near Brooklyn")

Yeah the hotlist right now seems to be Supro, Magnatone, Airline, Silvertone, Danelectro in roughly that order.

Perhaps I should start an indie band!

yeah for a while when i had the money to burn i was pretty fixated on getting one of these old guys as a small bedroom amp. i thought i'd be smart and track down some lesser known/less buzzed about amps but the market was still pretty ridiculous; all these unnamed/unidentifiable amps were getting VALCO and MAGNATONE just hung on the auction titles as attention grabbers and went for...way more than i thought they were worth, anyway. eventually cash just dried up before i could find anything in my price range. :(

(shhhhhh hint hint - if u want to pay less, scope for accordian manufacturer branded amps (which are all the same stuff but more art deco and weird plus peeps arent wise to them yet), also lectrolabs stuff goes for real cheap if yer looking just for old + simple)
