someone left a hip hop jam on here. its pretty bad. there is also a demo of a country song that is very bad. i have learned how to plug stuff in, record individual tracks and listen. i am possibly doing a very rough recording a surf/thrash band on sunday. nothing else to report at this time.

brownie, Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess i will be using it in tandem with something else for storage

$50 seems like a really good deal

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i probably paid too much for the 788 but it did come with the bonus hiphop track

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't quite go back to recording with a 4track, but I've recently been using a cassette deck to 'master' my tracks to for a saturated rounded-off sound.

tell me if I should ask this q in another thread because I'm recording a bunch of shit nowadays but does using any of this sort of technology come with any advantages over recording into a computer thru a preamp. I am a recording baby

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago) link

not really imo, though it is probably quicker to turn on & get going

bro-one (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 January 2012 23:23 (thirteen years ago) link

on an actual tape 4track you can do backmasking

NZA, Thursday, 19 January 2012 22:49 (thirteen years ago) link

what kind?

http://www.audio-ideas.com/reviews/analog-sources/graphics/marantz-pmd430-2.jpg

It's a Marantz 430, which I picked because it was both portable and a 3-head machine. I can then use it as an outboard effect, not only for saturation, but also in conjunction with a delay effect I can have two mono tape-delays as well.

Plus it also has a pitch control so I can use it to beatmatch when I'm DJing out.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 21 January 2012 17:02 (thirteen years ago) link

i recorded some things today of just myself. turned out fine. tomorrow i record a band for the first time.

im recording a punk band live with a p minimal setup, worried about spillover

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Sunday, 22 January 2012 05:21 (thirteen years ago) link

if you get spillover, "change the conversation" and convince everyone in the room that spillover is really cool now

do it, Rockapella! (Z S), Sunday, 22 January 2012 05:32 (thirteen years ago) link

they dont care i dont think

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Sunday, 22 January 2012 05:33 (thirteen years ago) link

sounds like they changed the conversation a while ago

do it, Rockapella! (Z S), Sunday, 22 January 2012 05:35 (thirteen years ago) link

these guys are good

do it, Rockapella! (Z S), Sunday, 22 January 2012 05:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i just recorded a band!

  • spillover was not a problem.
  • everything sounds good.
  • i need to learn about "compression" - that is my HW for the day.
  • mixing to come in the next few days, also overdubbing of whale sounds (?)
  • i have to do some punching in on the vocal tracks, the dudes insisted on letting it roll through the entire take and then did stuff like crinkle their paper rhythmically and take giant glugs of water. next time i will be bossier about this.
  • i need: tiny mic stands, a headphone splitter, and always better mics

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Monday, 23 January 2012 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

It's a Marantz 430

thanks, that looks dope. would love to have something like that so that i could easily bounce stems to tape and then back to the computer (do you just use the RCA ins/outs for this?), and mess with the pitch control.

the third kind of dubstep (Jordan), Monday, 23 January 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

It's got RCA ins/outs as well as microphone inputs and headphone outputs.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago) link

wtf these guys sound like beach boys not surf/thrash

NZA, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 23:54 (thirteen years ago) link

have you ever heard the beach boys? they are a punk band with no singing.

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 22:46 (thirteen years ago) link

OMG I used to be all about the Portastudio that am0n posted.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 27 January 2012 04:25 (twelve years ago) link

I once managed to make an absolutely incredible-sounding recording on a little tascam cassette 4-track of a power trio jam session sort of thing I was in. I never was able to replicate the blazed, super-saturated, slightly distorted sound I created that night -- I got objectively "better" sounding recordings but nothing that had whatever quality it was that that recording had. And it's certainly not something I can get digitally.

frogBaSeball (Hurting 2), Friday, 27 January 2012 04:39 (twelve years ago) link

three months pass...
ten months pass...

does anyone else here use this insane machine?

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

i am currently recording my 2nd and 3rd projects and have learned so much. just curious if all digital 8 tracks are as quirky and glitchy and this is just what im in for in life, or if this one is "special", like the kia sportage of the digital recording world

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:06 (eleven years ago) link

it could be this individual machine, too. (or THIS individual machine amirite *indicates self)

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

never had a problem with mine, so it's you

i could never figure out what the deal was with track 7/8. just make 8 separate tracks is all i ask

Punxsutawney PiL (brownie), Tuesday, 16 April 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago) link

no problems at all with mixing?

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

and yeah 7/8 is straight ridic

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

i think mine might actually need repair or something, cause i have mad trouble assigning inputs. like, it seems to "forget" several times per track and i have to be continuously assigning

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 01:21 (eleven years ago) link

it's probably just old age. are they even repairable?

Punxsutawney PiL (brownie), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 13:59 (eleven years ago) link

probably not. i might take it apart and blow in it tho

jk

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 14:10 (eleven years ago) link

i dunno you might be on to something. have you tried canned air? blow it in and around the buttons that assign the tracks

i

Punxsutawney PiL (brownie), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 14:29 (eleven years ago) link

i haven't tried it but im def going to. its in great cosmetic condition, and really doesnt glitch out or act crazy that much, it's just the track assignments and faders that act weird occasionally. i guess it's just old.

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 14:42 (eleven years ago) link

can anyone recommend a solid cassette recorder or four track for the sole purpose of bouncing tracks out of the computer, on to tape, and then back into the computer? i've been looking for a marantz 430 but they can be a little pricey.

shit tie (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

i don't think anyone makes tape four-tracks anymore, so you'd have to look for one in good condition on ebay

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

i guess that's obvious, sorry.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 15:23 (eleven years ago) link

yeah totally, i just want to know which one would be good for my purposes. i guess any of them?

shit tie (Jordan), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 15:25 (eleven years ago) link

yeah i think condition is going to be more important than brand if you're just using it to analog up digital tracks

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 15:27 (eleven years ago) link

why not just grab a 4 track cheapo reel to reel?

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 17:05 (eleven years ago) link

six months pass...

me and this thing, its such a weird codependent semi-abusive relationship

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

i hate it so much and have no respect for it, but i just cant bring myself to use anything else
