If you'd left it the canonical 3, I was so all-set to vote for Phaser. But why you gotta make me choose between Phaser and Tremolo coz Tremolo is so the way to golo.

Ring mod - which kind of counts as tremolo under certain circumstances.

for synth: phaser > vibrato > ring mod > tremolo > chorus > flanger
for guitar: ring mod > phaser > tremolo > vibrato > chorus > flanger

i love putting vibrato effects on synth. fuck flanger imo.

trem, followed by chorus. i have no use for flanging.

I never use flange. Auto flange is pretty much 'meh'. After reverb, phaser is the effect I use most on synths.

Or to put it another way, phaser always has a musical quality to it, while flange(r) just sounds like an effect that's been blanketed on top.

fyi as an inveterate cheater i am going to vote ring mod mainly because you can get those to do most of the other effects on here if the dicks that make it dont hide all the parameters from you (go EH ring thing!)

If I have no tremolo I basically can't play.

Chorus has I think more different applications in a band than the others. There are a few different ways you can use a chorus with a guitar and get some cool sounds, both for rhythm and lead. It can also be used a couple of different ways with the bass that really works with some tunes.

actually ringback tones in the US and the UK tend to sound like ring-modulated tones since they're made up of two sine waves close together in frequency: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringback_tone

I did actually vote ring mod myself, but I'm ashamed to say I can't bring to mind the difference between phaser and flanger. I know they're different, but if you asked me to attempt to impersonate either one, I'd be stumped.
