Anyone have a Boss Dr. Sample? 303, 404?

Looking for a sampler for DJing... more for just one-off sounds than loops. Definitely not for production of any sort.

Does the 303 have enough storage? Are SmartMedia cards still available? I think the 404 uses the CompactFlash format.

And are the pads on either of these velocity-sensitive?

Questions, questions...

You know, weirdly enough, I think former ILX poster Felicity had one of these.

i have a 303. you get 4 banks of 8 samples (2 banks on built-in, 2 on smartmedia which i'm pretty sure you can still buy). no velocity-sensitive pads. the biggest problem is that sometimes (on both the SM and internal memory) it will freeze up play for a second, i guess while it's loading samples from the memory. it's REALLY annoying.

Thanks -- I'm looking at older samplers too -- Akai S-20 anyone? -- but these still seem like prime candidates.

Nervous, what do you use yours for?

strangely enough i tend mostly to use it as an effects processor, running mic through it live as the playback freezing is pretty unbearable. you never know when it's going to happen, it's not tied to too many effects or too many samples playing at once or anything like that
also i think the polyphony is limited to 4 samples at a time

Actually another thing to look for is the Red Sound Cycloops, or the Peavey Grabber (which is a rebranded version of the cycloops). It's a bit cheaper than the 303 if buying used or the 404 if buying new and it has a form of auto time streching but less effects. the new one goes for about the same price as the 303 (but less than the 404)

oh, rubbish samplers ... i made an album 8 years ago using just an SU10 and an old busted 8 track. the SU10 was a complete pig to use!
