RIP OLD AAD

It seems the Greenspun Ask A Drunk has disappeared forever. From the looks of things its been deleted off the server. I know a few days ago there was a redirector on its front page, the white supremacist / gay porn nastiness was out of control and the SMH hate was getting silly.

I'm going to email Mr. Greenspun and see if the pre-SMH stuff still exists and if we can get a copy of it.

They were the blissed of times, they were the wurst of times. RIP.

damn right sweet prince and may flights of bagels cling to thy breast.

hurley (hurley), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Just got an email from Phil Greenspun. He's deleted all the unmoderated boards from AAD, so it is gone forever.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless . . . me and Jarl are going to do a guerilla mission to get it back. Stay posted.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll prepare sandwiches and chilled drinks.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

If you want to help - find the google caches of old AAD threads and copy the source into text documents. I've done from the classic "Does anyone know where to get Blissium . . . " thread to 30 threads before it. However i am tired and want to go to sleep. I'll do as much as I can tommorow. Celestes started from the beginning and is as we speak about 25 in. Get what you can.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Just emailed Lynskey to tell him I already have Word copies of most of the old Ask A Drunk, to which he’s welcome. I may have missed a bit here and there, so perhaps there’s a case for a belt-and-braces approach, but don’t worry, no major salvage operation is needed.

Tremendous fan of Ask A Drunk who on this occasion wishes to remain anonymous, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

"Classic" is subjective, I suppose.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The killer mourning over the corpse.
How touching.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

if the lad with the petition come round again i'll sign it twice this time.

hurley (hurley), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

We've done it all. Celeste has been painlessly crosschecking and looking for anything we've missed. God knows what to do with it all now. Rest assured, Mike Morris' "Trout Fishing in the Andes" and Bo Jeeves Jackson's classic "Rooster Porn" thread are now safe.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus, I like seeing Marty a bit rattled. Zen indeed!

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

All done... cross checked many times, and in the true spirit of the forum, no matter how much I check I seem to have save 1 more thread than I can see we need. Hey ho, at least it's that way round.

I have discovered there is a certain joy to be obtained from reading old thread titles alphabetically.

Who are you people? (Zen Clown, 2002-09-26)
Who are your influences? (Rex, 2002-05-09)
Why are we really here?? (Kaitlyyyn, 2002-10-03)
Why are you people so strange? (Kal, 2002-08-05)
Why are you so consistent? (Saullie, 2002-05-29)
Why can't I think of a question? (Peter J Ross, 2001-11-15)
Why have we let this disaster happen? (Pete Andrews, 2002-02-04)
Why can't posters spell aggression properly? (Vadgemonkey the Bilious One-Man Army, 2002-02-18)

celeste (Celeste), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be hosting the old threads on my server as an archive, links up when it's done.

All hail Google. Truly a miracle of the modern world.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You'll only delete it all by mistake.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought AAD had alreaady been archived at the Internet Archive?

JS, Friday, 14 February 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Only at a very early stage. We've got everything now. It took about 10 man hours to do. I expect big ups to myself, Jarl and especially Celeste. Celeste did most of the work which again proves her to be the greatest woman who ever lived.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 14 February 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What about all those melted records?

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 14 February 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

What about spending hours backing up the old AAD only to then delete it (whoops! tit!) and get Cel to do it, again? If its not sewing on one button its another ;-)

Robin (RJM), Friday, 14 February 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Right click Connection to Freeserve.
Properties
Tab Advanced.
Untick "share this network connection".
Are you sure?
YES, DAMN RIGHT.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe its time for a new forum:- "I love watching Matt, Jimmy and Robin's Petty Domestic Disputes"

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 14 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh for God's sake. That's it, I'm defecting to I love Conkers.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 15 February 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

That still makes sense post Sean deletion. Slick moderating that.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 15 February 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Do I at last detect the hand of God?

Weebleman (StillSimon), Saturday, 15 February 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

More the claw of Lynskey, to be honest. But it's a good claw, got gold inlay n'everything

Matt (Matt), Monday, 17 February 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

All the better to rip the little sod's heart out , then, in an aesthetic sort of way

Weebleman (StillSimon), Friday, 21 February 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well. Where is it then?

Pete Andrews, Wednesday, 26 February 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It's on my computer... and as soon as I get more than a day off work I'll get it back into a readable form. There are 420 posts that need editing.

celeste (Celeste), Thursday, 27 February 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

three months pass...
I spent 5 minutes looking at a doorstop today. the functiality is incredible genius...yet mockingly simple.

Mr. Beens, Saturday, 21 June 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Funnily enough, I was about to write something along the lines of RIP new AAD, but perhaps everyone is on holiday?

Weebleman (StillSimon), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still here in Erewhon, but I've been dumb as a box of rocks lately. I may have my boots on the wrong feet. I you should find yourself with my boots on, please send them to me COD.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Simply put no-one's putting their backs into it, lazy little sods, and I refused to post on my own as I have quite enough trouble with being a solitary man shouting randomly as it is. The case will be heard shortly.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 22 June 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(Lynskey's been genuinely busy, Jarlr'mai is pretending that he's been busy even though we all know that his job consists of eating soft fruit and occasionally saying "really?" in a slightly condescending tone of voice and Robin's been balls-deep in a child. Again. Sadly CJ has been seduced back to the more popular uplit sunny climes of ILE, I believe Pooster to be busy upon some unfathomable task the like of which I cannot begin to comprehend. Rex as ever is an enigma, a zephyr, I think he is sweeping a yard gently but in such a way as to ensure that the world remians in place. Yet still AAD stumbles on bloodied but unbowed, if only for our adoring public. To borrow a phrase from the ever excellent mark s on ILE lurkers I kiss you, you all r0x0r).

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 22 June 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"and Robin's been balls-deep in a child. Again."

Goodness. Over here, if that sort of thing isn't illegal, it is certainly frowned upon. Bombing children is OK though. To save them you know.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Sunday, 22 June 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I have not been seduced anywhere (sadly), though it's true I have made a few inconsequential posts over on ILE recently. I'm genuinely busy and coping with large amounts of personal and professional rubbish right now but this is nothing which cannot be cured by taking a cold shower and drinking an entire bottle of Pimm's, so I Shall Return! As General MacArthur said while stamping around the Philippines. Or something.

C J (C J), Sunday, 22 June 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Been trapped under heavy object. Back soon.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 22 June 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Blessings on all, from Britain’s dullest enigma and least soothing zephyr.

Rex (Rex), Sunday, 22 June 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I shall face the week with renewed equanimity, safe in the knowledge that sanity is still available to me in moderate doses.
The fact that the week consists of acting as a suit is less cheering. I have something of a need for an antidote to corporate speak- I occasionally have to use it ( for self preservation/camouflage), but I want to be really sure that I don't start believing it. Thus we can see that AAD is really a medical, nay, a prophylactic site.

That explains a lot.

Weebleman (StillSimon), Sunday, 22 June 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

eight months pass...
Is it good or bad that I have no recollection whatsoever of writing this?

Weebleman (StillSimon), Saturday, 13 March 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There is nothing either good or bad but drinking makes it so.

Rex (Rex), Sunday, 14 March 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Were it not for drinking, I, for one, would be a lesser thing.

'Whether at Nashipur or Babylon,
Whether the Cup with sweet or bitter run,
The wine of life keeps oozing drop by drop,
The Leaves of Life keep falling one by one."
