No-o-o-o, it can’t be true! Not after all we’ve been through together! Surely not a serious thread on Ask A Drunk???

Yup, ’fraid so. Just shut your eyes, clench your teeth and huddle together (with yourself, and possibly your imaginary friend), and it’ll soon be over…

It’s ten years this month since the poet Adam Johnson, a life-enhancing friend to several of the original Ask A Drunk crew, died at the age of twenty-eight.

To mark this anniversary the Carcanet Press is issuing Adam’s Collected Poems, and readers in London are invited to attend a modest launch-event at Waterstone’s, Garrick Street, Covent Garden, on Friday 16 May from 7-8 pm, hosted jointly by two of his closest friends, the novelist Jeremy Trafford and Richard Pyatt, Dean of Rhetoric at Westminster School and a valued contributor to the original Ask A Drunk.

Wine, readings, reminiscences and a sprinkling of Ask A Drunk veterans (though not me, alas, except in spirit) – really, what more could you ask of a Friday night?

There now, that wasn’t so bad, was it? Why, we’ll have you back to normal in less than a fortnight. Just take one of these alarm-clock-sized tablets every quarter of an hour until Lynskey is appointed a Knight of the Garter…

A glass of wine raised to his memory here.

one month passes...
Just to say – albeit a tad late – that the gathering seems to have gone off in fine style. A full house, an admired performance by Adam’s friend and editor Neil Powell, a decent number of copies shifted, and Adam’s mother Joyce as guest of honour. That’s gotta be better than knocking nails into your head with a terracotta model of Freddie Garrity, which – quite by coincidence – is what I happened to be doing that evening.
