Old Water

Ghislaine and Thierry recently unearthed some amphorae containing wine from around the 1st Century B.C out of the seabed of the Med near Marseille. I suggested that to be perfectly authentic, we should mix it with water as the Greeks did, before we drink it. Only, where does one obtain two thousand year old water? Any ideas?

The Alps, most spring water is millenia old.

The Antarctic is your safest bet for water of that provenance. Take a drilling rig with you, obtain a core-sample, and then........ring-bark it or something I don't fucking know.....

the water in my bladder is *at least* that old. cursed stones.

There's an old bucket of water by the shed in my back garden which has been hanging around for some time, and you're very welcome to it if you want. There's a bit of algae on the top but maybe that's good for you, like some sort of salad or something, I dunno.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

At least it's not carbonated, hurley.

CJ, is it two thousand year old algae?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure how I can verify that for you, Michael. I was but a twinkle in the milkman's eye in the year 4AD so it's not like I can confirm having seen algae in the bucket that long ago.

But there again, it's a bucket from the beach shop on Sandown Pier which I bought three summers ago, so it's unlikely that the algae is that ancient.

C J (C J), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a thriving market for algae. Cherie Blair, etc. Not sure what she does with it, mind. Spread it on? Face? Toast? Don't know.

Dorien Thomas (Dorien Thomas), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

You bought Sandown Pier? Or was it the beach shop? What kind of beaches do they have in stock?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello. Beach shop? I'd like to buy a beach please.

Certainly, sir. We have a choice. Popular, Secluded, Pebbled, Sandy, With or Without Promenade and Ice-Cream Vans, With or Without EC Health Approval, Nudist....

Oh. I'll just go for the sandy and secluded, please.

Certainly, sir. Credit card? That will do nicely. Just processing it. And where would you like it delivered?

Pardon?

Where do you want your beach?

Umm.....by the sea?

Ahh. Now that comes extra.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this some sort of token of approval? Because I really don't need it. Thanks anyway. (Hmm. Impressive though.)

Dorien Thomas (Dorien Thomas), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously,

There are no beaches where I live.
I used to pretend I was at the beach by sitting naked on a sheet of sandpaper, playing in a pan of water, but the other patients complained and now I have to wear clothes and the PICTURE of the beach they gave me is littered with beer cans and condoms.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I know that beach.

Dorien Thomas (Dorien Thomas), Thursday, 22 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Are your geta oversized, Zen?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 22 April 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Or are you sporting another kind of footwear?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:37 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Never did get an answer, did I?

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 13 June 2005 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

Your post, Michael, caused me to dig out my geta and try them on. (Out side, of course, I'm not a barbarian.) They are a bit small. I don't know if they were small when I got them or if my feet are larger than they were 40 years ago. I found a small pebble imbeded in one of the well-worn ha, obviously picked up while wandering the streets of Sasebo.
My tabi are too small but my dress kimono and obi still fit.
The nostalgia of the moment made me long for some saki, Suntori or Asahi.

Thanks for the memory.
