This thread is devoted to the more charming ornaments of the English language (and the many corrupt colonial dialects it has spawned). In addition to the delightful phrase incorporated in the title of the thread I would cite such carven gemstones as:

lickety-split
gadzooks
hidey-hole

I also elect for honourable mention the entire 200 word vocabulary of the lingua franca known in the South Sea islands as 'pidgin'. We should teach it to Zen Clown so he might make himself better understood.

higgledy piggledy
argy bargy
piffle (one of my favorites)

Crouton - a dried, doughy, sub-atomic particle among the smallest known to modern science. Smaller than our friend the electron, yet still a bit larger than the elusive quark. Adds texture and roughage to common objects such as tables and chairs.

Also, an excellent catalogue of British vernacular is being serialised in Roger Mellie's "Celebrity Swears" (Viz magazine).

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Monday, 15 November 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Poppycock.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 00:22 (twenty years ago)

And the Australian tongue is one of those corrupt colonial dialects:

Jiffy - a conveniently non-committal descriptor of time for the near future: "Yes, dear. I'll do it in a jiffy."

Witches tit

еdë §téè£, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 03:01 (twenty years ago)

"Witches tit"?

Mr. Stockwell was talking about quarks and peanut butter and I was getting confused and Dude said "witches tit" and I like totally freaked out, Man!

Thanks, Dude. I'd rather be oblivious than confused.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:37 (twenty years ago)

Welcome, Stephen Stockwell.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 06:49 (twenty years ago)

Hey Stephen? You know anything about witches' tits?

We have this weirdo on this forum who is locked into Halloween fantasies. Black pointed hats drive him wild. He has several brooms. He has a fixation on Harry Potter...

Of course I won't mention any names...

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 07:04 (twenty years ago)

If youm bes after seeing her besoms melover, youm bes' do it dreckly.

I grew up in Cornwall. Gad!

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 09:15 (twenty years ago)

Hello.

Such a small, yet dedicated enclave of ILX going on here. I usually just stick to ILM. How did you talk Tom Ewing into carving a space out on the server for this, this weirdness. I take it you don't get many visitors round 'ere. Is this house haunted?

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:43 (twenty years ago)

I've had more than my share of witches tits, although I couldn't speak with any authority on them. I'm really just doing my best to put those memories behind me.

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Stephen, ask a drunk started originally on the good ship LUSENET, first home of ILE/M, when our orginal home got trolled into the ground (it was an unmoderated forum) the great and good here granted us a home, for which we are quite fawningly grateful.

Our numbers used to be stronger, though our ranks were never legion, but have faith, we shall rise again.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 15:30 (twenty years ago)

Dude! I'm like soooo stoked you guys, like started this thread, man, 'cos I'm, like, way all into this kinda shit 'n' stuff.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Man. Like, chill. You know?

This group will groove again. We'll have antelopes and grebes and mandrills and...*removes hat*...Blissium!

Yes! Yes! All we have to do, Ask a Drunkers, is click our heels together and say, "There's no place like home, there's no place like home..."

When we wake up we will see that this has been a dream and Rex will be there and Linky and Jarlid and Robin and CJ and hurley and Weebleman and...and those horrible Yanks? "THEY won't be there will they, Aunt Em?"

"I'm afraid they will be, child. Zen Clown wants your cherry and Dude Steel wants your dress...Aimless? Who knows."

Matt has just aquired a Korean cookbook and HE wants your dog.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 07:47 (twenty years ago)

"Aunt Em, are these people really drunk?"

"I'm sure the Clown is but I don't know about the others."

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Wednesday, 17 November 2004 08:02 (twenty years ago)

I thought it would be click your heels together and say "there's no place like Ormskirk, etc"

еdë §téè£, Thursday, 18 November 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking of Ormskirk, and the Cheesemiester, and Sue, and hatpins...I didn't think about hovercraft though...Or mandrills.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Thursday, 18 November 2004 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Ormskirk and hatpins and grebes.... OH MY!

еdë §téè£, Friday, 19 November 2004 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm.
So is there any kind of tangible concept, god forbid a philosophy, behind this board? Is there a locus of thought happening here, or are you all just free radical quarks?

Stephen Stockwell (Stephen Stockwell), Friday, 19 November 2004 09:12 (twenty years ago)

"So is there any kind of tangible concept, god forbid a philosophy, behind this board?"

No.

"Is there a locus of thought happening here,

No.

or are you all just free radical quarks?"

Mostly radical drunks. Lynskey may be a quark as he has been reported to sometimes be in two places at the same time.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Friday, 19 November 2004 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I read somewhere that a ducks quark doesn't echo.... isn't that really odd?

еdë §téè£, Friday, 19 November 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago)

In the South Pacific republic of Vanuatu, a policeman is called a 'gubmint catchum fella.'

Wooden (Wooden), Saturday, 20 November 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago)

"Down Under", this forum would be fair dinkum, eh Stephen?

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Saturday, 20 November 2004 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Heave Ho, Friday, 4 February 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)
