Beatification is reserved for those conversant with the more spiritual uses of blissium.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 4 April 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

This pope was a great traveller. He made himself more accessible to people around the world than any pope before him. Some have called him a thoroughly modern pope for his use of technology and media to further the popularity and visibility of the catholic church.

Coming between him and beatification are a host of missed opportunities and inconsistencies. Women's rights in the church, use of birth control in an over-populated world, punishment of clergy who have assumed political roles to protect their congregations, protection of priests accused of sexual misconduct, furthering the divide between christian factions, heavy handedness with dissention in the church, no progress in dealing with the issues cripling the church today, and more. As a result, he leaves behind a church more strongly divided than ever before.

How valid is our human ability to recognise and declare a saint?
Perhaps the spiritual virtures of Blissium is as good a test as any.

MSW, Monday, 4 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

That was a misprint. I meant bleatings are reserved for those conversant with spirits and blissium.

I remewmber when me, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, the lamented John Arlott, Nicolai Ceaucescu, old Amis pere, and Mr Tom Baker from the television (or "goggle box"!!!) first met the Pope, or "Johnners" as HRH quickly dubbed him at a punch luncheon commissioned by that veritable maestro of mirth mr Alan Coren.

"So Johnners", enquired that esteemed "gagmeister" (!) "what do you do for a crust then, eh? Can't bring much in, this papal lark. Care to pen a little five hundred word piece on the lighter side of conducting mass?"

Johnners didn't say much, looking inquiringly at Coren whilst Kingsley helped himself to the ham, filling up his pockets with a jolly decent Wiltshire cure. The silence was broken by a low moan emitted by Mr Tom Baker whom, it transpired, had "Let off." How we all laughed.

Matt (Matt), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

I want to laugh too, really I do, but I sheepishly admit to being rather baffled at the many obscure references and name-drops, and I am left feeling like quite the dumb cluck.

MSW, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

"Sometimes there is nothing left for one but to have a good cluck."

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I can't cluck anymore but sometimes, late at night, I think about it.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

I know you mean fuck, I know you do. Poor chap, now also known as a willy-waster.

MSW (MSW), Wednesday, 6 April 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Just in case anybody was worrying, the Pope is still dead according to CNN.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 7 April 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

So is Elvis. I expected more of him.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Matt? what with the demise of MP I wish you would lighten up on the intelectuality so us Yanks could follow the thread.

(Zen? Are you admiting to stupidy?)

Na, I'm just ragging on Matt.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Matt, do not heed any message from Zen Clown that he cannot speak by swallowing volumes of air and burping out the words rather than voicing them. Make him work for your respect.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

When he has learned how to enunciate his eructations sufficently to be understood, we can put him in the circus to earn his liquor.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 7 April 2005 21:56 (twenty years ago)

I went to a circus once...I had to sneak OUT!

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Friday, 8 April 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

As worldly as I am, I am still shocked to find myself noting that the pope is STILL DEAD!!!? Is his wand broken or something? BTW, does anybody know the dean of admissions at the College of Cardinals and what the tuition is these days?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 8 April 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

Well...He's been dead for OVER three days. I say we write him off.

If ANY John should be a saint, it should be Lennon.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Friday, 8 April 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Can I still claim him as a dependent on my taxes?

Aimless (Aimless), Friday, 8 April 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

I'd say go with homeless nuns. Not many IRS agents possess the audacity to question THAT deduction.

Zen Clown (Zen Clown), Saturday, 9 April 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

Some claim the Pope actualy died a few weeks ago. There is some merit to this suggestion. Consider the poor emancipated figure wheeled to a window where a feeble wave was administered. No words spoken. How easy it must have been to kneel below the window sill and wave the hand already stiff with rigormortis. Perhaps strings were pulled from above. All in all, a serious lack of parkinsons quiver was observed during this time. The most popular belief is the delay was engineered to coincide the funeral with the equine UK wedding planned for that Friday. It all started with Henry VIII.

MSW (MSW), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 21:07 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
ha..poor pope.. he was a good man

skyler was here, Thursday, 22 September 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

...of humble origins. His mother, a penniless match girl and his father, a quadruple amputee, would roam from town to town, offering to rid the locality of rats for a small fee. Devout from the first, young Karol would say masses for the souls of the dead rats.

No doubt they are all now reunited in heaven, where no sorrow can reach them.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 22 September 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

At least on earth he was the ONLY pope. Imagine the clamour for attention when competing for the favours of the cherubs with over 400 of these dead creatures floating about.
