Water levels in the toilet

inspired by tales elsewhere on ILX of willies getting wet in the toilet bowl while pooing... The water level in my loo and every other UK toilet I've ever met is about 14" or so below the seat. So I though either some of you are truly blessed, or the water level in other countries is much higher. Did some research. the latter is definitely the case ( the former might also be true but that's not what this thread is about.) So, Americans of ILTMI, how the fuck do you cope with it? don't you get mucky splashback?

Seven or eight inches here. The ergonomics are such that to dip Puffin Jr. into the water I would have to be planking face down across the seat. In a normal seated position it is just not a factor.

My strong suspicion is that the posters in question were joking/boasting, but they are welcome to explain the angles of their dangles for a curious audience.

higher water level in theory could mean less splashback because less far to fall?

i don't think a couple inches difference in distance to the water makes much difference in the velocity of the turd

Right: any serious investigator would also have to look into US vs. UK diets and restaurant portion sizes. We may need more water in the bowl to accommodate larger movements.

ok i'm an American and i'm totally confused by the original post. The water level is 14 inches below the seat? Either the seat height is *way* higher in the UK or the water level must somehow be only an inch above the floor, in which case I don't know how it would flush unless the bottom of the loo goes below floor level (which is rarely does in the US).

In the US the seat height on older toilets (note: a "toilet" in the US means the loo, not the room it's in) is about 15" off the floor; newer ones are about 17" off the floor which is supposed to be a more comfortable height (although shorter people may disagree). The other thing that's changed on newer toilets is they use much less water - 5 to 6 liters compared to about 20 liters on older fixtures. It's easy to tell if it's a new one because there'll be hardly any water in it, whereas the bowl will be about 2/3rds full on anything made before the '80s. This means the old ones have both a higher water level and a lower seat, making the distance from seat to water level considerably less.

Despite that, a new toilet probably won't splash you any more than an old one, and may even splash less because the pool of water is so shallow. It's similar to how you won't get big waves in a shallow ocean (or something like that, ask a surfer to explain). I've renovated bathrooms professionally and have found the better new toilets (like the one below which I have in my home) flush much more cleanly and splash less than old ones despite the much lower water usage.

Finally, I did a quick online check to see if the same company who made my commode sells the same ones in the UK. Nope, they're totally different, with the biggest difference being they're mostly wall-mounted (rare in the US except expensive ones) rather than sitting directly on the floor. Nonetheless, the dimensions regarding water level and distance to seat are nearly identical to their American counterparts.

unless it was clogged, the water level in the American toilet would fall to the same level as the Australian toilet - the height of the bend in the drain pipe determines the water level
