Jim's CD's: shipment 1

I recently received an email from the wife of a coworker of mine from 14 years ago, named Jim. Jim's wife let me know that he had recently passed away and he wanted me to have his "massive" CD collection. Jim and I chatted about music while at work, he was an archivist at a history museum and had a wide range of musical interests. He was a lot older than me, I was in my early 20's and he must have been in his 60's at that point. I gave him copies of my mix cds, we were friendly but not close. I wouldn't have imagined that I was in his thoughts after I moved away. But his wife tells me that he talked about me often in relation to music and it was important that I have his collection. She mentioned that she played Jim some of his favorite songs as he passed, and I asked her what those songs were and made a playlist that I've been listening to. Jim passed away while Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da was playing.

The first two boxes showed up today and I'm blown away. A lot of african music and things I've never heard of. So in honor of Jim, and to help me sift through what may turn into a flood of music, let's poll what showed up in the mail today. This is my first poll, hopefully I won't donk it up. Cd's are listed in the order that I pulled them out of the box.

I do not know why this showed up in TMI, but oh well.

Cow_Art, Thursday, 22 January 2026 19:29 (three weeks ago)

What music did you talk to Jim about? What was on the mix cds you gave him?

Kim Kimberly, Thursday, 22 January 2026 19:45 (three weeks ago)

damn how cool is that

Back then I was always working on a series of mix cds that were numbered and had artwork and stuff. I
Once a year I would make at least one that had upbeat stuff on it that I would give as Christmas presents
to everyone I knew. Jim would actually engage with me and talk the music; most people didn’t. So I started giving him more of the odder mixes and he was always happy to hear new things. A lot of it was Pitchforky
stuff from the early 2000’s: White Stripes, Arcade Fire, Flaming Lips. A reggae mix, a sad-sack country mix, a Smog sampler, all kinds of stuff. He really liked the reggae mix which makes sense with the amount of stuff he has from Africa and all over.

We talked a good bit about things we were both very familiar with: Dylan, Joni Mitchell, that sort of thing. He had a crush on Joan Baez.

I hope This Is Reggae Music vol 3 is still on its way for you. I would've voted for that but not 2 or 5.

Terakraft rips but I think you might have to hit up the The Master Musicians of Jajouka

Jim was bald on top with a ponytail. Earring. Always wore a beret outside. Always had a fanny-pack on because he was deathly allergic to bees and it had a shot of whatever was needed in case he got stung.

Looking back on it, Jim was probably an old head. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a mess of Grateful Dead in his collection.

That Soukous disc is lovely - voted for that.

Very curious about the Honk Horn disc...

m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Friday, 23 January 2026 03:14 (three weeks ago)

The Honk Horn disc is pretty fun but I can never, ever, play it around my wife. It's some serious honking. Like, old timey car horns or something.

The Victorian Sporting Songs has gone in the trade-in bin. I was trying to be open-minded and looked at it as an important history of pop music thing but get that fucking sound out of my ears, the whitest sound I can ever imagine.

I miss that era of sharing cds with coworkers. I made so many connections that way. Hey mind if if I peruse your cd binder? I lived in Athens GA at the time and worked with several borderline famous musicians. Bill Doss got me into a lot of cool stuff. I remember Craig Lieske, who managed the 40 watt and was a roadie for the drive-by truckers, getting me into John Zorn and Ornette Coleman. They were older than me and so kind and giving with their music knowledge. it was probably the most musically formative period of my life. Anyway, RIP to both those dudes and Jim as well

So I'm ripping all of these CDs and I have an old Iphone that I'm going to dump them in an listen to them on shuffle: Radio Jim.

Yeah, this has me thinking about physical media and how it can move in odd directions, completely different from the algorithmic way of being directed to music. One's not necessarily better than the other, but hardly any of this music is stuff I would have thought to look for but already I'm finding so much rich stuff in there. And the way it came to me, and the Amoeba price tags on it, I love this shit. Pry my CD's and records out of my cold, dead hands.

I remember when storage got cheap enough that friends would offer me their hard drives to copy gobs of music and I always declined. It was too much and without context.

Very nice story, especially that he was in his 60s and you in your 20s.

I just saw this thread but what a wonderful story and gift. I would freak if all this landed in my lap. I would basically stop listening to anything else and listen only to Jim CDs.

Johnny Clegg is the worst of this. I’m sure Clegg is a good guy but it is awful.

Gracie Fields sometimes sounds like an inspiration for Tiny Tim.

Star Feminine band is the best, so good. The Africa remixed CD is very nice. Terakaft kicks ass. I’ve only really started digging into this and I’ve been notified that two more boxes are on the way.
