Have you been pregnant?

How many times? How did each pregnancy end? The outcomes obvious to me at the moment include miscarriage, non-surgical abortion (ab. by pill), surgical abortion, childbirth resulting in raising a child, childbirth resulting in adoption by a friend, childbirth resulting in adoption by an acquaintance, and childbirth resulting in adoption by a stranger/agency.

What happened? Was the pregnancy planned or unplanned? Were you using a birth control method that failed?

Yes, once, unplanned, pill, didn't have it.

I'm right right and you're wrong left (Susan), Monday, 22 September 2008 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

Never. I was just trying to find something on the percentage of women who die without ever having been pregnant. I seem to recall it was a v. small number. So yeah I'm planning to be one of those.

This is a for real TMI thread, so here is a little TMI!!

I was pregnant twice, once in fall of 2005 and once again in fall of 2006. I've talked about it a little on ILX before on some of those retardo abortion threads.

The first time was a mistake and birth control fuckup, though it was my fault and not the fault of the birth control (incidentally, it was the NuvaRing). I had a non-surgical abortion at about 2 weeks, which is MEGAearly, but I worked at a women's clinic at the time. Wasn't tough to figure out.

The second time I was screwed over by a dishonest guy (Essentially, he secretly took the condom off in the middle of sex. I didn't notice. Worse, this event occured while listening to Bonnie Prince Billie perform on Conan O'Brien), but I take responsibility for trusting him with anything because he was a drunk and a dumbshit. I had a nonsurgical abortion this time at 4 weeks, and I was sick as HELL during this entire time (couldn't eat, couldn't not eat). I left the guy, but spoke to him about it about a year later, at which point he cried (and I quietly hawed at his retardation).

Maybe it's the abortion rights worker in me, but I have no qualms about any of this stuff.

Oh, and the first sign both times was brast tenderness, before a missed period or anything.

○◙genital grinder◙○ (roxymuzak), Monday, 22 September 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

Another of life's greatest lols is the fact that pregnancy symptoms and impending-period symptoms are generally the same.

xxpost

I don't either yet I was hesitant to answer this question. I don't know why but I've increasingly become wary of posting personal info online.

I'm right right and you're wrong left (Susan), Monday, 22 September 2008 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

Once. It was a forgetting to use birth control (due to drunkenness) rather than a failure. Doctors said there was a very high chance of miscarriage at best or serious health risk to me if the pregnancy went to term (I think the exact words used were "you and this child are not both going to make it through the pregnancy") so I had RU-496.

I don't know why I'm logged out, as I've talked about this on ILX before, but I'd rather my name weren't on this post because I'm afraid of zingage.

This thread is sexist.

Man, if someone zings you for that, they are Sarah Palin. Fuck 'em.

I wonder what countries you're both in? I wonder how the experience differs.

I don't worry about this as personal info (not that you shouldn't either, your experience is totally different from mine, etc, no one has an obligation to showcase their abortions on flickr or something) because there is no one in my life that it is a secret from, and there is no situation in which I would be embarassed for someone to know it (or worse, ashamed of it). It's just not a big deal to me. It is for some people, and that's cool too.

○◙genital grinder◙○ (roxymuzak), Monday, 22 September 2008 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

I'm undergoing a weird situation right now. Someone whom I don't want any contact with is about to be released from prison after 20 years. I'm changing my phone number, getting a PO Box and will have to lock down (if not delete) all of my social networking profiles. I don't think there's anything here that can lead anyone to me but I just don't want this person finding anything out about my life ever.

Probably a non-issue but it's just made me question how open I've been online in the past.

I'm right right and you're wrong left (Susan), Monday, 22 September 2008 21:06 (sixteen years ago)

Well shit, I understand!

○◙genital grinder◙○ (roxymuzak), Monday, 22 September 2008 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

Essentially, he secretly took the condom off in the middle of sex.

What the fuck, who the hell does this? Did he even give you some explanation afterwards? (Not that there's any real explanation for such behaviour.)

Tuomas, Monday, 22 September 2008 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

His explanation was basically "loldrunk", which I was too, so I gotta take half responsibility for the thing. He was a jerk, though, but it's over now and I don't have a grudge about it anymore. Young, drunk people do dumb shit. *shrug*

I've had a condom accidentally slip away while I was drunk and having sex, which I only noticed afterwards (thankfully there was no ejaculation), but intentionally taking it away is something else...

Quite a few years ago I had a late-stage termination. The pregnancy was unplanned and accidental, but totally my own fault (too long a story to tell here). Because of extremely irregular and rare periods, because I was in denial, and mostly because I was a complete idiot, I didn't realize I was pregnant till around 21 weeks. The ex-boyfriend was in another country at the time and I never told him about it till a couple of years ago.

A termination that far along is not pleasant: it takes a few days, is extremely uncomfortable, and essentially involves going through labor - several hours of the worse pain imaginable, and no happy bundle of joy at the end of it. It was terrifying and excruciating, but like Roxy, I knew for sure that I didn't want a baby and couldn't raise a child.

At the time, I told only a couple of people. I wasn't ashamed of having had a termination; I was ashamed of having been so irresponsible and stupid as to end up pregnant in the first place.

It was the worst experience of my life - initially, I was informed that I wouldn't be able to have an abortion, and it's probably only the second time in my life that I have seriously considered suicide. So-called "pro-lifers" need to consider this when they're standing outside abortion clinics screaming abuse at girls and women.

awww, that's terrible, I'm so sorry you had to go through that :(

Yeah, that's pretty awful. Good that you made it through.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 16:00 (sixteen years ago)

It's awful that you were told this. I'm sorry that you had to experience that.

That's horrible.
Those protesters are just disgusting. I had to run the gauntlet the last time i had an abortion.

The time before that, I lived on Martha's Vineyard and had to go to a clinic outside of Boston. They gave me a code name: Dorothy. And where I was going: Kansas.

It was the clinic that got shot up by the guy who also did the olympic bombings - I think? Anyway, the clinic had been shot up - four or five women died, starting with the receptionist.
So...full metal detector - like airport security.
That pissed me off so much. Not the security - people need to feel protected. But the fact that i had to go to an anonymous door in an anonymous building and give a code name before i could even enter.

Wow, mine was in NYC and it was just in my OB/GYNs office.

I'm right right and you're wrong left (Susan), Wednesday, 24 September 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

My answer: No. And I've never thought I was, or worried that I was, either. I didn't start having...to worry about it until I was in my 20s anyway, and by then I was old enough to be (some might even say) paranoid about protection. And I hope never to have to decide what to do about an unexpected babby forming, because I know what I would do but I don't think my...I will take ridiculous precautions never to have to decide.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 24 September 2008 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

i never formed a babby but i know what i would do if i did. i also try to avoid it in a paranoid fashion! sometimes it is TOO easy to avoid though :(((((((((

lil yawne (harbl), Wednesday, 24 September 2008 21:00 (sixteen years ago)

I think I was initially kind of careless because I really didn't understand how easy it can be to get pregnant -- I understood this in my mind, of course, and I knew all the facts, but in practice...well, I had been in a 4-year relationship, we used no protection (withdrawal only), and I never got pregnant. So I was like, huh! Then as soon as I was with another guy, I got pregnant.

Bright Future (sunny successor), Thursday, 25 September 2008 02:56 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe. I might have had a miscarriage when I was in college but it was never confirmed.

"It was the clinic that got shot up by the guy who also did the olympic bombings - I think? Anyway, the clinic had been shot up - four or five women died, starting with the receptionist. So...full metal detector - like airport security."

One of my v good friends works at that clinic and just won a 10k scholarship given out annually to a PPLM worker by that receptionist's family.
