so a guy i know is working for someone who found out that his wife was a prostitute. trying to figure out if that is perceived as being worse or better than finding out that your wife/husband/s.o. is having a torrid affair with a single person, where there are emotions involved instead of cash.

Poll Results

finding out your s.o. is having a torrid affair is worse 12

gotta go with prostitute. at least she'd be bringing home some cash instead of buying her new fuckmonkey sweaters and shit.

Too Into Dancing to Argue (ENBB), Saturday, 28 February 2009 04:10 (sixteen years ago)

to be clear, the poll is asking which is worse. so you are saying torrid affair is worse, correct?

Isn't being a prostitute just having a ton of torrid affairs?

oilyrages (libcrypt), Saturday, 28 February 2009 04:22 (sixteen years ago)

never been to a prostitute I take it

鬼の手 (Edward III), Saturday, 28 February 2009 04:28 (sixteen years ago)

鬼の手 (Edward III), Saturday, 28 February 2009 04:28 (sixteen years ago)

I mean, either way, you're probably going to leave your wife. So who cares.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 28 February 2009 04:29 (sixteen years ago)

no way man marriage is forever

emotional betrayal vs. STDs?

too many misters not enough sisters (milo z), Saturday, 28 February 2009 05:07 (sixteen years ago)

Stop!

Question is wrong!

The original scenario was that the s.o. was a pros,i.e. in the past.

THAT should be the Q.

Otherwise, the answer is fairly obvious in a sackful of wrong.

Whereas a more interesting Q is "The Past" vs "The Present", I reckons.

Mark G, Saturday, 28 February 2009 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

Well, to answer the question quite honestly - I think that mainly "being a prostitute" - despite what many men think - is an entirely cash-based decision. I don't think anyone becomes a prostitute because they think it's a totally horny and amazing career option. (This is some weird fictional fantasy lie, not the blunt awful reality of prostitution.) It says more about the situation that a person has found themselves in, with regards to not having other options.

I don't think I would condemn someone for having been a prostitute. (Although, in my weird double standard way, I probably *would* have more trouble with someone that had been to a prostitute - that I'm still not sure about that.)

It is on no way comparable to the level of emotional betrayal and dishonesty involved in having an affair.

But again... I'd have more of a problem with a partner that had been to prostitutes than one that had had an affair - it speaks to a disconnect between sexuality and emotion that I would find troubling.

whorin is worse cuz she's probably bringin home GRIDS and whatnot

s1ocki kong country (cankles), Saturday, 28 February 2009 12:26 (sixteen years ago)

sorry is the tense is unclear, the guy found out she WAS CURRENTLY a prostitute. being a prostitute in the past and no longer being one would be a completely different issue, yes.

He grew in Pussyville. Population: him. (call all destroyer), Saturday, 28 February 2009 14:01 (sixteen years ago)

But *why* is she a prostitute? Does she have some drugs problem that he's not aware of, or are they that strapped for cash?

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 14:05 (sixteen years ago)

don't know. the guy's job makes me think they're probably not strapped for cash. drugs is a possibility, or maybe she just likes the ca$h and anonymous sex more than her husband.

He grew in Pussyville. Population: him. (call all destroyer), Saturday, 28 February 2009 14:08 (sixteen years ago)

Dunno, something about this whole story just makes me instinctively want to call bullshit.

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:04 (sixteen years ago)

The "whole story"? Is there something more to it than, dude found out his wife's a prostitute? Are you doubting that a married woman would ever want to have sex with lots of men for cash?

oilyrages (libcrypt), Saturday, 28 February 2009 15:09 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, I am fucking doubting exactly that, because that's all we have. Some dude who is a friend of a friend talking about a wife that none of you have ever met.

And some weird ass story that matches up with no actual reality of genuine prostitution outside some weird Belle De Jour fantasy.

Yes, I am doubting it.

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

Well, it's entirely possible that destroyer has made up this elaborate tale to lead us all down the primrose path for his own profits and lols. Can't argue that. He could have cooked up a slightly better story, knowhattamean?

oilyrages (libcrypt), Saturday, 28 February 2009 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

see, you're making assumptions about the motives now. there's a HUGE difference between someone having a few bouts of paid sex with socialites and government officials to get fur coats and jewelry and helicopter rides; and someone blowing random dudes in the alley so they can get enough of a drug fix to make it through the day.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 28 February 2009 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

What Whiney said.

Also, I can't help but weight up those motivations. I mean, what is the motivation of a wealthy woman, not known to have a drug habit, to engage in actual prostitution (as opposed to an affair or meaningless casual sex) - vs. the motivation of a wealthy man facing a costly divorce, who might just have a bit more of a motivation for smearing his wife's character.

That's what my gut reaction is.

Though Whiney brings up the horrible Feminist can of worms argument that essentially all patriarchal marriage is prostitution... sex for cash vs. sex for fur coats - but we're not going to go there today, right?

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)

finding out your s.b. is having a torrid affair vs. finding out your s.b. is a prostitute

ugh let's not go there, MB

Ah, I see it now. The issue here is that y'r doubting an elaborate tale, or tales, you made up to go along with destroyer's bare-bones account. Fair enough.

antimona (libcrypt), Saturday, 28 February 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

No, I'm doubting some random thing that a friend of a friend of SOME DUDE ON THE INTERNET supposedly said.

Is that really so hard to get your head around?

Sneaky Sneaky Prog Friend (Masonic Boom), Saturday, 28 February 2009 17:41 (sixteen years ago)

Personally, I preemptively doubt the entire Internet.

guyz i literally do not have any more detail than what i described in the setup. fill in the story however you like and vote. this isn't complicated, nor is it particularly important.

masonic i have no idea what's bothering you so much but you can let it go now

I just asked my wife which she thought was worse and she refused to say, claiming that they're "both pretty bad", leading me to believe she thinks they are equally bad, or if you turn it on its head, they're both equally good.

So, ah, does anyone need my paypal ID?

There should have been an option:

"Whichever one actually happened"

As I often say, "Which hurts more, your broken finger, or someone else's broken leg?"
